In a new text, with updated maps, and more than a hundred new photographs, he places in context beers great and small the world over. Jackson's definitions of beer styles are used by academic institutions. He describes the bouquet and palate of beers more thoroughly than any other writer. Jackson's definitions of beer styles are used by academic institutions. He describes the bouquet and palate of beers more thoroughly than any other writer. No one has visited more breweries in more countries. Jackson talked to brewers about their intentions and examined their production methods before applying his judgement to the finished product. Often, they consult him. His advice has been sought by the world's largest brewers and many of the smallest.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Jackson ( Simon & Schuster Pocket Guide to Beer ) argues convincingly that it's time the great beers of the world found their rightful place alongside fine wines. To this end, he offers a beer drinker's grand tour, focussing on Northern and Central European countries and the British Isles, but including the U.S., Canada, Australia, Asia and Africa. The author describes each nation's brews, their origins and the brewing process; provides instructions for proper serving and imbibing; and surveys the history of famous and little-known breweries and watering holes (addresses included). He urges us to seek out exemplary regional brewers and the new ``microbreweries''which produce specialty beersspringing up across Europe and North America. Travelers are bound to savor his suggestions on beer-tasting jaunts (e.g., stopping off along Belgium's Bruegel route to enjoy the area's refreshing wine-like Gueuze brews). Amply illustrated with maps, black-and-white and color photographs, fine art and reproductions of antique beer advertisements, coasters and labels, this exceptional guide is as rewarding to scan as to study. (Jan.)
Library Journal
This update of Jackson's landmark World Guide to Beer (Prentice-Hall, 1977) follows the format of the earlier book and includes many of the same photographs, but it also features a completely rewritten text with revised maps and charts which cover the changes in the international beer scene over the past decade. In addition to discussing the beer renaissance of the 1980s and the differences between beer styles and brewing techniques, Jackson leads the reader on a worldwide tour of the great brewing nations--critically describing the beer culture of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Australia, with North America given expanded coverage in this book. The greatest emphasis, however, is on the beers of Europe. Even libraries owning the earlier edition should consider purchase.-- Peter C. Leonard, Mt. Lebanon P.L., Pa.
