Overview

Safety is the dream.

Nightmare is the reality. A nightmare where danger lurks around every corner.

Jack Walker, journeyed half way around the world and completed his daring rescue. He must now return home, traversing a world filled with endless hordes of night runners; the genetically altered, ferocious species that now inhabit the dark recesses left over from the demise of mankind and now dominate the planet. The only things more dominate are the billions of corpses left to rot where they died.
It is through this world that Jack must use his special forces training to lead a small group of survivors back home to where there is the faint hope of sanctuary. His training is pushed to the limits as he is confronted with situation after situation coming face to face with the night runners. He must walk that delicate, fine edge between action and keeping his kids out of harm's way; between taking risks and turning away as he continues his quest for survival.
Never having walked away from risky situations, Jack must now carefully weigh his decisions as the stakes are much higher. His kids' very safety hangs in the balance, along with the safety of the few remaining survivors. This gripping, action-packed tale tells Jack's story of survival in a post-apocalyptic world filled with peril.

Safety is the dream.

Nightmare is the reality. Those who have survived remember a time when the dream was the reality. But now, the world has moved on.

I really wish I could say that this series is terrible and the writing is horrific, but I can't!! The 2nd book was even better than the first. John O'Brien does a great job of interweaving his past military knowledge with humor and suspense through this book. I found myself laughing at the banter between Jack and Lynn, but even more so when reading Jack's inner dialogue to himself. It sounds just like things I would be saying to myself-minus all the combat/zombie issues.

This really is a great series that is completely different than any "zombie" books I have read. I really like the fact that Jack has him family around him, he has a big heart tempered with a take no bs from anyone attitude, and the story line focuses on a bigger picture than just lots of fight scenes with "night runners" as Jack and his group now call them.

I like the test message that popped up on his open phone lying in his hands, "Are you alive? I need help."

Excellent series. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Great read. Was hard to stop reading so I could lead a normal life.
Great new take on the tired zombie genre. Would recommend to anyone. The humor and realism makes it most enjoyable. I have purchased the rest in series after reading the first two.

    Not a bad read...

I picked this up after reading A Shrouded World with Mark Tufo. The story was slower and more detailed, characters not as well developed as Tufo's. Some parts of the story are a real stretch, even in a ZA story. I'm not sure if I will continue this series.

I finished reading A New World 10 book series by John O'Brien. This series is so good and exciting and unique, I will have to read it again after I get caught up with other books on my reading list. I'm going to miss all my good friends who are characters in the books. If you like the zombie/horror genre, I highly recommend this series.

    Loved it!

I've read tons of apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic and dystopian type books, but this series is one of my absolute favorites. The suspense, adventure, horror and intrigue kept me glued to the story. I usually like my stories to have a wrapped up ending, but hope this one keeps going. I've read each a couple times which says a lot since once through with a book I usually don't re-read them. So if you like apocalyptic stories then definitely check out John O'Brien's series!

    So lame

I got this book because of the plot and rave reviews. This is one dull read. The author spends too much time on minute details that add nothing to the story. I can skip a few pages and the character is still droning on about mundane things. The beginning is confusing as it does not explain what happens to the children's mother, or she is indeed the reason they are hiding in the basement. I would think the kids would be a bit more upset at not knowing the fate of their mother. And really, this guys takes his kids and another girl to the middle East to search for his girlfriend??? His main priority is to find a safe refuge for his family and trekking around the globe for, as he puts it, his sweetheart.
