THE STAKES ARE HIGH...
Ten strangers, recruited by an edgy new reality show and marooned on an abandoned island overrun by wildlife.

One dies in a horrible accident.

Nine realize they are all past survivors, alive only because they've beaten incredible odds once before.

One by one, their hidden secrets are revealed.

Eight discover they are trapped. Caught in a game so deadly that the most terrifying experiences of their lives were only its qualifying round, they must now face the greatest danger on the island... each other.

There's nothing deadlier than a survivor-type whose back is against the wall. And one of them is not who he or she claims.

Seven fight to escape.

Six try to solve the mystery of who lured them there and why.

Five... Four... Will anyone survive New Year Island?

Kirkus Reviews

A reality show becomes a test of survival for 10 strangers stranded on a small island in Draker's debut thriller. What do a producer of animated films, an Army corporal, a rock climber and a doctor have in common? They're all survivors of tragic events and four of the contestants on a new reality TV series set on Año Nuevo Island, a remote nature preserve inhabited by large, aggressive seals and sea lions. With $5 million at stake, however, the players are less worried about the animals than their fellow contestants--particularly when people start dying. The novel initially hints at a nature-gone-wild plot: Contestants JT and Lauren, for example, are barely off the dock before a "massive wet shape" chases them. In the end, however, the book focuses on the island's human element. In fact, the people start sizing each other up and mentally formulating teams before they even know what the show's all about. Even a simple game of capture the flag results in a player tasing her own teammate before the group begins to suspect that there's a saboteur in their midst. There are a few graphically violent scenes, but for the most part, the author competently emphasizes suspense. In 700-plus pages, Draker has ample room to develop his cast, which he does effortlessly; Camilla, who survived a freeway accident when she was 7, gets most of the spotlight, but the story is teeming with other resplendent characters, such as Mason, a wisecracking banker; Juan, a model-handsome scuba diver; and three scientists who try to ensure that the "TV people" don't disrupt their research. As the characters' sullied histories are slowly and meticulously exposed, readers may have difficulty deciding whether they sympathize with many of the contestants. That said, it's easy to root for their survival in this story about the terrifying things that desperate people can do. A twisty, engaging thriller featuring well-developed characters.
Editor of numerous NYT and international Bestsellers, including Brad Meltzer's #3 NYT Bestseller The Zero Game - Michael Carr
New Year Island is a page-turner, with more twists than a den of snakes. In fact, I can safely say that it's the most exciting, most promising work of fiction to cross my desk in the past year. It's fast moving and unpredictable, with distinctive characters, gripping images, well-crafted action scenes, nice, apt touches of humor, and plot twists we never see coming. I really do think Draker has a winner here his first time out.

Meet the Author

Paul Draker writes tightly-plotted, gritty modern thrillers that combine a well-crafted mystery whodunit with gripping psychology and relentless suspense. Each novel is an immersive roller coaster thrill ride, filled with twists that keep the reader guessing, right up until the last page.

Writing and storytelling are nothing new for Paul. In sixth grade, when he was nine, a classmate liked a story he wrote, and took it home. The horrified parents called the school and demanded that whoever wrote it be sent to see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist asked Paul if he could keep a copy of the story... and then asked Paul to sign it for him.

Paul currently lives in Palo Alto, California, with his wife and three daughters. An avid scuba diver, he has spent much time underwater in Palau, Yap, Honduras, Thailand, Hawaii, the Florida Keys, the cenote caverns of the Yucatan, the Caribbean, the Virgin Islands, Caicos, and the "Red Triangle" off California's coast. He also enjoys skiing, swimming, and windsurfing, and has had extensive tactical training in firearms. After one too many high-speed motorcycle crashes, he is no longer allowed to own open-class sportbikes, which is probably a good thing for him and everyone else.

Paul has worked in the aerospace/defense industry on a variety of classified and unclassified programs for the Navy, Army, Marine Corps, and DARPA, ranging from strategic national missile systems to technology augmentation for small-team tactical infantry units. He has also led a Silicon Valley technology startup delivering massively-scalable custom Internet software to Fortune 500 clients, and headed a leading videogame studio developing mobile games for top-tier publishers such as EA, Disney/Pixar, Sega, Warner Brothers, THQ, and Glu. He holds advanced degrees in electrical and aerospace engineering from MIT, Stanford, and U.C. Berkeley. This broad-ranging engineering expertise lends impeccable technical authenticity to his stories.

I can't remember the last time I read a book I couldn't put down...Until Now. To say this is a satisfying read would be a massive understatement. This story has it all...suspense, mystery, thrills, chills and the best part is you can't figure out what's going to happen next. Loosely based on the original story Ten Little Indians this updated version is a psychological thriller that is so well written you feel like you are part of the story. Make sure you start your read on Friday night and leave your weekend free otherwise you'll have to take P.T.O. from work. This book is a 1500 page turner. Glad to have a new writer who knows what suspense is all about. Jp

    Fun book

This was a fun book with a great plot. It was a bit wordy and could have been written in 500 pages as compared to the 1600 pages it contains but was entertaining none the less.

I love this book. It has all the elements of a good thriller, suspense, and horror novel rolled into one. Every time you think you have the story figured out it takes you on a rollercoaster ride to the unexpected. This is one book I would love to see made into a TV series because the big screen couldn't do it justice.

    A REMARKABLE BOOK

I enthusiastically recommend New Year Island! It was an exciting book to read! The author, Paul Draker, developed the characters in detail and made you care about them! Also, the book was full of surprises and very easy to read, and I could just picture everything as it was happening!

I think this book would make a very exciting movie! I hope one day that the book IS made into a movie, because I am sure it would be successful! I enjoyed the book so much that I emailed Paul Draker and told him so and I have never written to an author before!

Read this book! You will not be sorry!

    Great read!

Caught my attention from page one. Great plot, with excellent character development. The book reminds me of Michael Starks "The Island", which i enjoyed as well. Keep up the good work Draker, i look forward to the next one.
