Overview

New York Doo Wop, Vol. 1 collects some relatively obscure harmony vocal groups who recorded for Bobby Robinson in the 1950s. Robinson established a slew of labels throughout the 1950s and early '60s, including Red Robin and Whirling Disc, drawing heavily on regional East Coast talent. Nothing included here broke nationally, but all of these groups had some degree of local success, and their singles have been much prized by genre collectors. Highlights include the Empires' "Whispering Heart," the Channels' "The Gleam in Your Eye," the Federals' "While Our Hearts Are Young," and the Kodaks' "Make Believe World," and if none of these sides rises much above average, taken together they form an interesting glimpse of the New York vocal group scene of the mid- to late '50s.
