Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
New York City stands out as one of the most prosperous and internationally noted cities in the world. Nevertheless, the state of New York encompasses far more than just the "Big Apple." In New York, writer Jim Mezzanotte offers a brief overview of some of the keynote elements of New York's state history, economics, geography, populations, and attractions. This volume of the illustrated "Portraits of the States" series is written in a way similar to other books in the set. The concepts and vocabulary are appropriate for elementary level readers. Throughout the text, inserts are included that highlight personalities, events, and items of local interest. Elements within the text deal with issues linked to Native and African Americans. As a whole, this is a reasonable introductory book for youngsters interested in this part of the United States. Also included is a brief resource listing including related Web sites and books dealing with New York history. 2006, Gareth Stevens, Ages 9 to 12.
