Library Journal - Library Journal
Another superb addition to Abrams's "365 Days" series, this title gleans pix from the New York Times's gargantuan photo morgue of seven million stills, with some debuting here. As Gay Talese states in his engaging intro, this volume "is a collage of New York in splendor and struggle, and of people who personify a survivor's city." Bridging two centuries, the pix reach back as far as 1898, when early press photographers in high collars lugged monstrous tripoded cameras, then range through the middle years of the Speed Graphic boys with press cards wedged in their hatbands to today's digital shooters, who've bid film adieu. Mixing 'n' matching images from throughout the decades, the photos and brief captions chronicle neighborhoods, slice-of-life stories, events great and small, and ordinary working stiffs as well as actors, athletes, writers, musicians, the rich and poor, the workers and the tramps, the cops and the crooks, the joyous and the despondent-all the ingredients and seasonings that have been stirred into the melting pot that is New York. But the real star is the city itself, and it challenges belief that all this could happen in one place and only in one place. A remarkable photographic record as bold, beautiful, and diverse as the great metropolis itself; highly recommended.-Mike Rogers, Library Journal/LJX Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
