Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"The most browser-friendly reference book imaginable…this book is destined to become your essential tool."

—O Magazine

"This handy guide is a wide ranging and lively GPS system for the many bewildering choices and questions we all have every day. Here you can get useful tips on how to grow an artichoke, prepare for a biological attack, find a job, select a furnace, and so much more."

—TOM BROKAW, author of The Greatest Generation

"This book is absolutely addictive. It's got answers to most questions you've ever wanted to ask, and it grabs you with questions you probably never thought of. Benjamin Franklin would be proud."

—WALTER ISAACSON, author of New York Times-bestselling Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

"This book is better than Google and a whole lot easier to use. You don't have to sort through 2 million hits to find the information you're looking for; just flip through this single volume to find practical wisdom on a slew of topics."

—DR. MICHAEL ROIZEN, co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, You: The Owner's Manual

"The New York Times Practical Guide to Practically Everything is that rare combination in a how-to book—very useful and a great read. The easy part is finding practical advice about something. The hard part is putting the book down."

—EVAN THOMAS, Assistant Managing Editor at Newsweek and author of John Paul Jones: Sailor, Hero, Father of the American Navy

"A savvy, sure-footed guide through life's many minefields. Indispensable!"

—BRIAN DUFFY, editor, U.S. News & World Report

Library Journal
Brace yourself for entertaining reading in this volume of stuff you didn't know you needed to know from a cast of nearly 300 contributors. Offering something better than barren factoids but not an exhaustive study of any one topic, the guide attacks a range of subjects with up-to-date information. The curious should read it in small bites to avoid becoming addicted. The text is arranged topically but is just as fun to devour at random. Learn how to set up a gerbil residence, how to make accurate weather predictions for as little as $20, where to get an 11th-hour passport, how to hold a chocolate-tasting party, and what kind of wireless gear to purchase for your home. In the preweb era, this was the stuff of librarians' dreams. Now the "essential companion" is an option for the web-weary or those who still like to curl up with a beverage and a fascinating read. There's an index (not seen), but since everyday life is often decidedly impractical, this book won't be the first place to turn for answers. It's just as much fun to spend time mining its depths, and you may end up smarter on a variety of subjects not a bad proposition for such a fascinating ride. Bottom Line Recommended as a fun, circulating book for popular collections in public libraries but of little value to reference collections or academic libraries. Kelli Perkins, Herrick Dist. Lib., Holland, MI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
