Magenta - Chapter 1

    /Beep, beep, beep./

And there goes the alarm. The terrible herald that drags me out of bed in the wee hours of morning to go to school. I used to be excited about my education. But by the time the first few years rolled by, the droning-ons of bored teachers reminded me of those record tapes they store in the Council Museum. The timeline of our past, told in funky doo-dads and rusty gadgets on display. They go on and on and on. When it's over, you press a button to make it start, and it replays. Again and again. There is no end.

Therefore, learning has become nothing but a waste of time. I don't know why I bother. Maybe it's the little voice in the back of my head, telling me 'that it's for the best.' Or maybe it's the other voice. The one that's forbidden music to the ear, like sweetened honey dripping down a burnt esophagus. So rare, but almost addictive. My mother had that sort of voice. She would take great care to remind me to "eat my CaRad," and "make sure to finish school." Her voice echoes through my head when it's quiet. I have a lot of quiet, down in my little home by the river.

I start changing clothes. Tug everything off, grab some stuff from the squeaky closet hangers, pull it on after a couple cautionary sniffs. Kick the dirty stuff into the little laundry basket that guards the door. Waddle out to grab my ratty bag. Stuff in my abundance of books. And then I'm off.

For the sake of education (or so they say), we ride an old school bus to school. I run down a big hill to reach the place it stops, if I make it on time. When I run is the only time I feel free. My feet are flying, only occasionally skimming the asphalt, the little 'tmmps' in synch with my heart beat. But as I near the bottom, my bulky backpack comes down from it's momentary levitation, crashing down on my back. It's like a cage; the tattered straps are the restraining bars that keep a bird from it's purpose. And when I enter the rickety orange vehicle, I throw down my bag, only to be caught in another trap. That's a good word to describe me: Trapped.

When I plop down on a smelly seat at the rear of the bus, it zooms off in a cloud of smoke. The fellows-in-commute out on the road gesture angrily at us, wavering to and fro on their hoverboards. But we're fleeing their anger. In 'fight or flight', flight is always the best answer. In no time at all, we arrive at school. It's a modest building, built up with titanium walls and a dusty brick roof. The contrasting shroud clashes terribly, and every self-respecting neat freak cringes.

Once we shuffle off the bus and enter school, the tape rolls again. I shove through crowds of hustling eighth-years and whining third-years to reach History class. Sitting down on my assigned pod, Lao Ava begins her raspy lecturing. Before she gets too caught up in the story of the Silk Road and I get bored of pretending to pay attention, Zhong Sanders' hologram pops up from it's pedestal. We all hop up from our seats and recite:
"Greetings, Zhong Sanders, Teacher of Teachers, Leader of All." The hologram wavers slightly as Sanders flaps his hand at us in a lazy greeting before we all sit back down.
"I request that Asmaa Quy reports to the Council cubicle."

Everyone's blank gazes swivel toward me in unison as I stand up again.
