Overview

From beloved author Lois Duncan comes the sequel to HOTEL FOR DOGS -- a brand-new adventure with Andi, her brother Bruce, and their canine companions!

Now that Andi is no longer running a hotel for dogs, she decides to start a new project -- a newspaper for dogs! With her brother Bruce and a few friends, the kids make a hit out of their paper. But they also attract the attention of some mysterious dognappers. Can the kids find the criminals and bring their dogs safely home?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The sibling stars of Hotel for Dogs embark on a tamer adventure in this disappointing companion novel, arriving nearly 40 years after its predecessor. When Bruce, Andi and two friends publish a newspaper for dog owners, the business takes off. Profits multiply when the kids move the paper online, enabling Bruce to buy the dog of his dreams, but the threat of a lawsuit (one man is livid when exposed for neglecting to scoop poop) shuts them down. The story switches gears as local pets, including Bruce's dog, begin disappearing, and the kids, aided by their detective great-aunt, vow to catch the dognappers. Readers will quickly pick up the scent of the villains-an Eddie Haskell-like bully and his equally unctuous cousin-which derails the tale's suspense. Dog devotees will appreciate occasional animal antics (one pet dines in a high chair). But overdoses of staid prose ("Bruce was an honorable boy, and when he made a promise he kept it") and dated dialogue (" 'What a horrid thing for those boys to do!' Andi cried angrily") make for a sluggish read. Ages 8-12. (Apr.)

Children's Literature
Cited as the companion to the author's popular book, Hotel for Dogs, this volume is fun and exciting. Bruce and his younger sister, Andi, decide to publish a newspaper for dogs as a moneymaking scheme. Bruce's incentive involves buying a dog away from a neighborhood bully. Andi is more interested in providing the doggy gossip, poetry, and recipes. When the events surrounding the newspaper's publication get out of hand, their parents shut down operations. Next, the dogs featured in their paper start disappearing. And the abductors are demanding ransom from people on fixed incomes. Bruce's dog also disappears. He suspects the bully and his cousin as the dognappers. Together with their Aunt Alice and their friends, the kids devise a plan to find the snatched dogs. Readers are invited to solve the dognappings along with the characters and learn about surveillance, deception, and responsibility. Both boys and girls will find something to love in this book. Reviewer: Sue Poduska
Kirkus Reviews
More than 35 years after Hotel for Dogs (1971) (and coincident to the release of the film), the Walker children return for serious dog drama. Bruce is unable to purchase his pooch until he agrees to sell a local newspaper for dog-lovers, complete with poetry, recipes and the latest gossip. (His sister Andi's melodramatic contributions provide humor throughout: "Just five sweet, cuddly balls of fuzz, / But, oh, how hard the parting was!") While initially popular, the paper fails when investigative reporting spotlights a hurried pet owner and his absent pooper-scooper. Concerns intensify when a dognapper begins to steal pets, and the children devise a plan to catch the culprit. While the earnest dialogue is occasionally stifling, the siblings' relationship is genuinely portrayed. There are more outlandish moments than in the original book, with Aunt Alice's wit and ingenuity propelling the action. The predictable plot will leave mystery fans unsatisfied, but readers seeking wholesome fare will appreciate the resourceful characters. At bottom, it is the dogs, from loyal Red Rover to pampered Bully Bernstein, who should win best in show. (Fiction. 8-11)

Now that Andi and Bruce are no longer running a hotel for dogs, they decide to start up a new venture: a newspaper for dogs. Hoping to use the money to buy a dog from a neighborhood bully, the two use it as a moneymaking technique. The newspaper is a big hit, but they attract some unwanted attention. When the newspaper gets out of hand, their parents shut it down. But then the dogs who were featured in the paper start disappearing, and their abductors begin demanding a ransom from people on fixed incomes. When Bruce's new dog that he got from the bully disappears, as well, the two suspect that their friends might be behind the dognappings. Can Andi and Bruce find the kidnapped dogs? A fun, quick read, especially for reluctant readers. The characters are true to their natures from the first book, HOTEL FOR DOGS, and are easy to like and relate to. The plot keeps moving and the mystery is well-developed. Those who like mysteries, animal stories, and realistic fiction will enjoy reading NEWS FOR DOGS.
