Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susanna and Vincent Spancella
The characterizations of the four protagonists are types that children may identify with. The story demonstrates that all four have attributes which contribute to the group achieving its goal. Tentpeg is an interesting name. The zombie stranger is at first suspicious but then becomes a valued member of the group. The Pig illustrates what is common to "you" may be exotic to someone else. The portals and catapults are good spatial and mathematic concepts. There is not too much violence so teachers and parents need not worry about the content. This book could be useful in challenging a gifted class whose reading level is below the level of the text. The pictures are clear enough to decode the unknown words. Such exercise is fun for gifted children. Also a remedial class who should be above the reading level of the text can be helped by the pictures and possibly motivated by the interesting and suspenseful story. It is a story based on a video game. The story definitely grows on you and the art work is quite good. The ideas are fairly complex and can lead to some good discussions—ethics, morality, and things not being what they seem. Reviewer: Susanna and Vincent Spancella
School Library Journal
Gr 3–5—By turns funny, sarcastic, and downright bizarre, this book will pull in as many readers as it turns off. After vanquishing the bad guys the last time out, Pilot and Huxley find themselves transported to Limbo. They try to get home, but it is more difficult than it appears. They visit an alternate universe dedicated to different holidays, only to find themselves thrown into a gladiator battle in a Christmas-themed coliseum. Although the boys escape, they end up transported to the middle of a war in the year 3047, ensuring that the adventure will continue. The plot is largely secondary, as jokes and insults flow freely. It should be noted, however, that this humor is exactly what will hook reluctant readers. The cartoon style of the full-color artwork is purposefully simplistic, yet always functional. The panel layout is clear and easy to follow. Not an essential addition, but likely a popular one.—Travis Jonker, Dorr Elementary School, MI

This series is a very small graphic novel but it is very funny.
