Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "Rookie Reader" series has been around for years and this is a new sub-series entitled "Rookie Read to Learn: Numbers and Shapes." The focus is comparing and understanding sizes. The story is cumulative with each thing being taller than the preceding one. To illustrate, next to an ant a berry is tall, next to a berry a snail is tall; and so on until we reach the end of the story and learn who is the tallest of all. The illustrations make it very clear what the size relationship is, so the visual clues will solidify the learning process. After the story is finished there is a brief blurb about the author and illustrator, followed by pages of activities. They include a recognizable song about ants, a quiz to identify which item is bigger, rhyming, colors, opposites, and making a book to show big and small comparisons. The final page contains a list of the twenty-five words that make up the story. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
