Overview

Blood, guts, and glory—the NFL you never see on TV

Behind every glittering NFL game on television is a world of happy pain for a hundred men. NFL Unplugged lets you see that world through the eyes of the pros who live and sweat in it—including firsthand accounts of more than thirty players and coaches from teams across the NFL, including Mark Schlereth, Bill Romanowski, Kevin Long, Kyle Turley, Jon Gruden, Hugh Douglas, Jon Runyan, and Michael Strahan. Here are the places the cameras and microphones don't go, places where you'll discover:

  • What really happens in huddles and pile-ups
  • How coaches' speeches can inspire players or deflate them
  • Why every NFL player dreads training camp—and loves it, too
  • What "the dark place" is and why players go there during games
  • How a player can be crippled six days a week and play football on the seventh
  • How far some players and coaches will go to win
  • Why so many players end up broke after years of huge salaries

"Very rarely—once a decade maybe—do we get the chance to peer behind the NFL curtain and experience the lives of players. Anthony Gargano has done that here, and we're lucky to get such an unvarnished view."
Peter King, senior writer, Sports Illustrated

"He may ooze of South Philly on his wildly successful radio show, but the Anthony Gargano I know also is a brilliant writer and reporter who was made to do a book that rips open the NFL and presents it on a transparent, compelling platter."
Jay Mariotti, national columnist, AOL FanHouse and daily panelist on ESPN's Around the Horn

"Gargano gives you a front-row seat to the agony and ecstasy of the NFL. From packed stadiums and glory to the icy reality of pain and injury, you won't be able to put this book down."
Mike Mayock, analyst, NFL Network

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Gargano, of Philadelphia sports radio, displays the Hobbesian view of pro football: "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short." For NFL players, only delete "poor." Gargano examines the camaraderie of the NFL's "grunts" and their world of constant pain, focusing mainly on former linemen with a Philly connection. This warts-and-all perspective goes behind the scenes at training camp, in the film room, the locker room, the huddle, and even down to the bottom of a pileup on the field—a place where no one wants to be. Gargano also covers the verbal abuse, emotional manipulation, and preening machismo NFL players endure to add a mental counter to the physical challenges. The perspective here of both tacklers and blockers and the tackled and blocked comes across with humor, appreciation, and honesty. A fun read for football fans wanting to understand the game at its most intense level.

not as unplugged as i would have liked

not a literary masterwerk by any stretch. interesting for avid fans but is way more sanitized and politically correct than a behind the scenes nfl book should be. instead, check out Boys Will be Boys for a true unfiltered account of the NFL.

    Good Subject Matter, Horribly Written

Anyone can make a book about behind the scenes action in the NFL interesting, but this book is sloppily written and hard to follow at times. Basically, I came away wondering if the author took high school English classes. His use of large or infrequently used words just make you wonder if he is trying to cover up his lack of knowledge about grammar and sentence structure. In my opinion, this book is worth about $3. Any more than that is a waste. Maybe the author played football himself, and suffered one too many headshots.

    more from this reviewer

Brutal and honest, a great look behind the scenes of the NFL.

This is a must read for modern day NFL fans. Gargano's book goes behind the scenes to reveal what goes on before the coin toss and after the whistle, in a gritty, riveting style.

Fans of the game from the 80's and 90's will recognize names like Bill Romanowski, Ike Reese, and Brian Mitchell. The author interviewed them and dozens of others to bring the reader into the locker room and onto the practice field.

Overall, the picture isn't overly pretty. Players admitting they tried to hurt other players. The truth about what happens in a pile. Teams forcing players to play when hurt. Horrific injuries, and retired players barely in their thirties who can't run or even walk without tremendous pain.

But there are bright spots too. Humor, cameraderie, and love for the game are interspersed with the heartaches, and provide a counterbalance to the negatives. The author uncovers some of the "why" behind why football players and coaches do what they do, and true fans will find that appealing and worthwhile.

Not for the faint of heart, as the language can be crude (it's real) and the injuries can be described in bloody detail. But NFL fans can't help but to enjoy this relatively easy and quick read.
