Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Fans of the earlier "Fairyland" series can welcome another addition to the adventures of Kristy and Rachel. The girls have gone to Camp Stargaze for a week of summer vacation. The night fairies who watch the hours between dusk and dawn have asked for help to get back their magic fairy dust. Jack Frost and his goblins return to create nightly chaos. The girls notice that some of the nighttime animals are awake during the day and the daytime animals, cows and sheep, are asleep when they normally are awake. The girls believe this to be Jack Frost's work. A magic owl transforms the girls into fairies and leads the girls to Nia, a night fairy. The goblins have taken some of the magic fairy dust into the camp and the girls have to get the dust back. Female readers in grades two through four may enjoy this as it features familiar characters. However the story would be much more appealing if it had more challenge to the problem Kristy and Rachel must solve. The dust is recovered too easily and everyone recovers too quickly. The goblins are easily fooled and befuddled by the fairies; Kristy and Rachel do not have to work very hard to help the fairies. The mixed-up animals give the book a promising start but the easy solution against the goblins leaves a disappointing ending. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk
