Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Bauer describes how glaciers formed the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls. The word "Niagra" means "thunder of the waters" in the Seneca language. There is information about how the falls became North America's first tourist attraction and the crazy stunts people performed, such as going over the falls in a barrel and tightrope walking across the falls. While that is of some interest, more about the falls would have made this a better companion to Grand Canyon, both of which are part of the "Wonders of America" series. The illustrations are serviceable, but do not really convey the grandeur of these waterfalls. Part of the "Ready-to-Read" series, this is a level one book aimed at kids starting to read.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-With its softly colored, naive-style watercolors, simple vocabulary, and large typeface, this Level One reader introduces a popular site. Bauer tells how the Falls were formed and discusses the Native American origin of the word Niagara and the attraction of the Falls for daredevils. A fact page for older readers is included. This is a worthy purchase for one-on-one or group sharing, or for beginning readers.-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
