    Richard Leonardi Uncovers Nicaragua

Richard Leonardi is the foremost English language expert on Nicaraguan tourism and has been guiding visitors to every corner of Nicaragua for over 7 years. His book is much more than a travel guide however. This dense volume digs into the essence of Nicaragua. Mr. Leonardi's first hand knowledge of the country, it people, nature and culture are apparent everywhere and make this book top notch. Footprint Handbooks have always made travel guides for intelligent travelers and this little gem of a book is no exception. Not only is it packed with practical information for the visitor, it also brilliantly sums up such difficult and controversial subjects as Nicaragua's history and highlights the true passions of the Nicaraguan people. Mr. Leonardi also gives extensive coverage to the undiscovered nature of Nicaragua, which includes 83 nature reserves, over 50 volcanoes and two giant lakes with more than 450 islands. The author's persistent humor keeps the guide refreshing and his numerous short stories on the country make it worth the price of admission. The Nicaragua Handbook does much to reveal what Nicaragua is really all about. It is a far cry from its abused media image. Bravo.

    A Great Guide to Nicaragua

Richard Leonardi¿s Nicaragua Handbook is an excellent guide to a country which lies somewhat off the beaten tourist trails of Latin America. My wife and I came to live in Nicaragua earlier this year, and we have used the book extensively both as a touring guide, and also as an invaluable resource for new residents such as ourselves. It has helped us enormously in getting to know this beautiful country, as well as settling into life in Managua. The author does a superb job of sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with the reader in a clear and informative way. The guide contains a wealth of up-to-date practical information on travelers¿ needs, as well as a good selection of maps and town plans. Restaurant and hotel suggestions span wide price ranges, making the guide useful for visitors on all kinds of budgets. The Nicaragua Handbook also offers interesting and even-handed discussions of Nicaragua¿s complex politics and history. The text is liberally sprinkled with `shorts¿¿brief stories and descriptions of particularly interesting events and aspects of Nicaraguan culture, which make it all the more readable, as well as very educational. It is especially pleasing to see a section on responsible tourism, which suggests ways of minimizing the negative impact of tourism on local communities and the natural environment. I strongly recommend this book to anyone planning a visit to Nicaragua.

    Excellent vacation guide for Nicaragua

We found this guidebook very helpful in planning and enjoying our recent family vacation in Nicaragua. Especially helpful were sections on traveling with children, which we did (2 teenagers), and things to see and do. The health info was helpful too, but seemed a bit overcautious on vaccinations and food/drink. We felt quite safe, and the Nicaraguans were very friendly and social. We spent our time in the quaint little seaside town of San Juan Del Sur on the Pacific coast, southwest corner of Nica. We had a delightful stay at the Villa Isabella Inn, which was recommended by the Footprint Nicaragua Handbook. We could certainly see why. A very nice facility with bright, clean lobby, and comfortable rooms. Fine, quiet location 3 blocks from the beach, and near the green hills. Breakfast is included and other meals can be purchased, which we did. The food was great in taste, quality and quantity. The owners Mike & Jane are wonderful hosts, and see that all your desires are met. We highly recommend Villa Isabella, and would happily stay there again. Thanks to Footprints for helping us have a great trip.
