Overview

When a haughty Lord meets a determined Miss the only winner is love.

Captain Nicholas Price is a man with a plan. As the newly minted Lord Stafford, he is determined to have the best of everything. Clothes, horses, women. He is well on his way with a well-born fiancée and an estate in the country.

Miss Emeline Wilson is a woman on a mission. Forced into penury by the cruel estate manager of the indifferent Lord Stafford, Emeline is determined to confront the new Lord with his callous ways.

When they finally meet, sparks fly, and Nicholas finds himself knocked for a loop by the feisty, intelligent, and definitely not high-born Miss. But what's an already engaged Lord to do when the plans he's so perfectly laid out for his future suddenly seem so wrong?

Warning: This book features an arrogant Lord, a determined Miss, and plenty of steamy moments between the two.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Capt. Nicholas Price, the new Lord Stafford, is a boor, and schoolmarmish Emeline Wilson, one of his tenants, is a shrew. It’s the premise of many an engaging romance, but Holt (Dreams of Desire) fails to provide a crucial element: sympathy. In 1813, Nicholas unexpectedly inherited an earldom; a year later, all he can think to do with his wealth is flaunt debauchery before Regency London. Women exist for “one thing and one thing only,” and when Emeline confronts him about the tenant situation on his estate, Nicholas duly tries to use her. She goads him into visiting his property instead, but too late: the villainous land agent has burned down her house. Nicholas, belatedly appalled, gives Emeline and her sisters houseroom, and then things really heat up. Nicholas’s eventual about-face is unconvincing, the historical details are often improbable, and the amorous and parental exploits of Nicholas’s kindly brother tend to overshadow the main romance. Loved the hero!!

I have read all of Cheryl Holt's books, and this is one of my favorites. I loved the relationship between the brothers and how the hero's better qualities show up in the end. I like a book where the hero is very masculine (no metro-sexuals for me) and this one delivers. Let's face it, romance novels aren't read to expand our intellect....they are escapism and this novel is escapism in it's finest form. BTW nice touch by only havIng the hero pictured on the front....you can imagine yourself at his side!!! But seriously-- if you' re new to Cheryl's book don't miss "Love Lessons"---very steamy.

    Didn't like it

I've enjoyed other books of Cheryl Holt but I didn't like this one at all. The characters are egomaniacal idiots. One torturous misunderstood situation after another. It was all or nothing every time! Complete ecstasy or complete despair. No understanding of others. Just enormously self centered people banging there heads together for 650 pages. Then the last 50 pages are the happily ever after. No trust was build for the main character. His history was to make promises he didn't intend to keep but at the end he promises to "do the right thing" and she agrees? Stupid, stupid, stupid people!

    Great Long Read

I really loved this book! But with all of Cheryl Holt's books you can find some similarities between other books.

    more from this reviewer

    Bravo

This aptly named book was impossible to put down. Nicholas Price, the new Earl of Stafford is an unforgettable hero, hopelessly flawed, but charming none-the-less. And the spirited heroine, Emmeline Wilson and her friend Josephine Merrick are the kind of characters you love to root for. Holt always knows how to draw excellent villains that keep you on the edge of your seat. This book will have you laughing and at times cringing in embarrassment for the sweetheart heroine. A must read!
