Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Some stars rise quickly to the heights of fame and just as quickly burn out. Minaj's early career gave every indication that her quick rise to fame would not withstand the pressure of maintaining the high level of originality that propelled her to stardom. Minaj's attention to detail and her demands for excellence made her a highly valued addition to the hip hop genre, but also gave her a reputation for being difficult to work with. Minaj's early success came primarily from riding on the coattails of successful hip hop artists, but once she was established as a credible artist in her own right, Minaj managed to maintain her position as a successful solo artist. Minaj's unique style and her desire to set a good example for young girls have made her a popular and credible example for young hip hop fans. Harris presents Minaj's life in a no nonsense manner, focusing on Minaj's career with only brief asides into her private life when it impacted her career. Full color illustrations emphasize Minaj's colorful personality and short asides give depth to the text and serve to illustrate what has influenced Minaj throughout her career. The text will appeal to Minaj's fans as well as any fan of hip hop and is part of the "Contemporary Lives" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams

One of eight entries in ABDO's Contemporary Lives series about current music and acting celebrities, the book follows the transformation of Onika Tany Maraj from her birth in Trinidad to her current status as one of rap's brightest stars.  This can be seen as a rags-to-riches story, of a little girl from a poor family who was raised by her grandmother when her parents immigrated to New York City.  Nicki's struggle to be accepted first as an actor and finally as a rapper was overcome by hard work and the desire to become accepted in a male-dominated field.  Numerous color text boxes describe important facts about the artist from her island homeland to her mentors in the music industry to the team of employees who handle Nicki's numerous wigs.  The book is visually appealing with plenty of color photos; a timeline and glossary complement the text.  Teens will enjoy the book but it will become dated rather quickly.
