Children's Literature - Debby Willett
Nico's Aunt Sue was going away for the weekend and needed a favor. Her little girl, Lola, needed a special person to take care her while she was away. Would Nico be willing to take care of Lola while she was away? Nico was more than happy to watch over Lola over the weekend. Lola was a little black pug, and he knew she would need time to get to know him first. She first sniffed his hand and soon they were on their way to the backyard for fun and games. Nico made sure Lola had plenty of cool water when she got thirsty. When friends came over to play with Lola, Nico was careful to show them how to be careful with Lola. All too soon Nico's time with Lola would be over and Aunt Sue would be there shortly. Nico wondered if he would ever see Lola again. There are several lessons to be learned in this sweet picture book: the value of kindness, to remembering manners, taking turns, helping others in needs, and more. This book is not just a story of a boy caring for a dog over the weekend. Ms. Hill successfully crafted a picture book that teaches life skills to beginning readers using engaging photographs of a friendly pug named Lola. Ms. Graunke's photographs are perfect for this story and will draw the young readers in. The cover photograph is the perfect foreshadowing of the context of this picture book. Nico & Lola is an excellent addition to a home, public, or school library. Reviewer: Debby Willett

PreS-Gr 1—Nico's aunt asks her nephew if he would be so kind as to watch her pug, Lola, while she's away. Excited, Nico agrees, but later begins to wonder, "How will I be so kind?" So begins a pleasant story about sharing everyday kindnesses. This book has a wealth of meaningful messages like, "being kind is showing concern for others." Each message is illustrated by the actions of either Nico or Lola as they spend their time together doing doggy and boy activities. Each new page shows the duo participating in excellent behaviors: cleaning, helping one another, sharing, exercising, and getting along with others. The rural, verdant setting adds to the appeal of this story. The photos suffer from some poor composition and digital editing, but the adorable nature of the subjects more than makes up for this. A good choice for teaching core values, this book will have wide appeal for young audiences.—Jasmine L. Precopio, Fox Chapel Area School District, Pittsburgh, PA

A great book for this troubled world. Adult and child alike can read or listen to the story of Nico and Lola. Turn off the GameBoys, the Weather Channel or mindless chatter and focus with the same degreee as Nico does on learning to be kind. When we look at a chld, we can easily assume that s/he is going to grow up being kind, charing and listening. Perhaps this could be true if they have the experiences of Nico?! Just on the chance that each of us understands as the book tells us "that we might be just a little bit kinder..." this read is well worth the time. And then read it again and again to yourself and to others!
