Les Histoires de Nicolas de Damas et ses autres uvres, en particulier la Vie d'Auguste, couvrent une immense periode qui va des grands empires orientaux d'Assyrie et de Perse jusqu'a l'epoque contemporaine de l'auteur (1er siecle av. J.-C.), avec le principat d'Auguste et le regne d'Herode-le-Grand. Initialement destinees a Herode et, a travers lui, au public hellenise de l'Orient romain, ces uvres offrent des recits sur les origines mythiques des cites grecques et sur la periode archaique - notamment sur les tyrannies de Corinthe, de Sicyone et de Milet - ainsi que sur la Lydie des Heraclides et des Mermnades. Un ouvrage ethnographique, intitule Recueil de coutumes, complete ce panorama par des anecdotes se rapportant a l'ensemble du monde mediterraneen. Les fragments qui subsistent de la biographie d'Auguste composee par l'auteur couvrent ensuite la periode qui va de l'adolescence d'Octave jusqu'a novembre 44 av. J.-C., en developpant un long excursus consacre a l'assassinat de Cesar. L'Autobiographie attribuee a Nicolas de Damas evoque enfin le contexte familial de l'historien et son education a Damas ainsi que son activite politique et diplomatique a la cour d'Herode, dont il fut le secretaire, l'ambassadeur et le confident. Redigee a la troisieme personne, cette uvre est la premiere autobiographie de langue grecque qui ait ete conservee.
