School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-10-A critical presentation that reflects the contemporary view of nicotine, which is now classified as an addictive drug. After a brief history, Monroe describes the tobacco industry, physical effects of tobacco and nicotine, and changing public attitudes, and suggests ways to break the habit. The easy-to-read, well-organized text is documented with footnoted statistics and studies. Important points are highlighted in boxes that do not interfere with the narrative flow. There are a few black-and-white illustrations, mostly showing antismoking posters. Each chapter is followed by discussion questions. There is a long list of organizations with addresses and phone numbers. Facts and figures presented here update books such as Jack Henningfield's Nicotine (Chelsea, 1992).-Martha Gordon, formerly at South Salem Library, NY
