This edition really bridges my department's needs in offering a daunting 300-level/600-level Peninsular novel survey. I found that both levels of the students actually read the introductory material that I had gone over during our first meeting. Guiller's approach to the introduction hit various points that resounded with the students' interdisciplinary honors seminars from semesters past. A couple of the grads based essay ideas on the narrative construction chapter.
The most remarkable thing from my point of view was that I was able to assign it and deal with themes over two three hour meetings. No wasting half the class period dealing with the typical plot summary and comprehension issues that can arise. Now if I could only find similar editions of the other 5 novels on the reading list...
