Overview

What glorious music! Carl Nielsen's quartets abound in Beethovenian rigor, Haydnesque wit, and Brahmsian warmth. The textures are often intricate and reward repeated listening. Shamefully, few ensembles have taken up these melodious masterpieces, despite the fact that they're more easily approachable than Bartók's deservedly famous quartets. Luckily, Naxos gives us these superb performances by the Oslo String Quartet, a young Norwegian foursome that plays with rich tone and perfect intonation. These musicians are fluent in the composer's language and the music speaks powerfully in their interpretations. This beautiful recording offers the final pair of Nielsen's four quartets. It would easily be a primary recommendation at full price; at Naxos's rock bottom price, it's a steal.
