Overview

Whether it's chilly or sultry, there's something intoxicating about night air, and this collection of popular classics perfectly evokes that unique nocturnal atmosphere. The consistently ravishing performances and Telarc's lustrous recorded sound are at least partially responsible for the magical effect. Acclaimed American conductor Leonard Slatkin leads all but two of the tracks, summoning sumptuous playing from the St. Louis Symphony. In their hands, Ravel's melancholy Pavane for a Dead Princess dances with quiet grace; Satie's spare Gymnopédies are hypnotically languid; and Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun is an ethereal expression of ecstasy. Ralph Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on "Greensleeves" ends the album with a bittersweet reverie. The inclusion of Debussy's exquisite and rarely heard Sacred and Profane Dances for harp and strings is a special treat, as are excerpts from Respighi's stately Ancient Airs and Dances, the latter elegantly performed here by Jesús López-Cobos and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. Other soothing selections by Bizet, Fauré, Tchaikovsky, and Borodin round out this enchanting and -- at 73 minutes -- generous compilation.
