Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - David Adams
There are over 1700 entries of this title on Amazon. Choosing which versions of the Moore classic is easy in this case because the illustrations are by Tomie dePaola. He sets the book in 1940s New Hampshire, and based the borders on designs from New England quilts, including many from his own collection. The appeal of the Moore story will be obvious to young and old, but the appeal of dePaola's illustrations might be even more interesting. This reviewer immediately noticed a lack of any of the pizzazz or even gimmicks so much associated with books written for today's generation. The pictures are, instead, more reminiscent of the kinds of books published at least two generations ago. The simplicity of the drawings is their implicitness, capable of stirring imagination through Moore's lively words. The lines of dePaola are unpretentious, a seeming effortlessness that will capture both nostalgic readers and youngsters hearing the story for the first time. Highly recommended for public and school libraries. Reviewer: David Adams
