Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
With a request to stay up until midnight and a big "PLEEEASE," a little boy and his young brother are granted permission by their parents to usher in the New Year. Together they shop for party supplies, eat their favorite foods (pizza, wings, and salad as shown in the illustrations, followed by cupcakes), make a toast, and state their new year's resolutions. There is just one problem: the little boy cannot think of one. They play games, recall fond memories of the year, and even go outside for a walk. Just before midnight—you guessed it—the little boy and his brother fall asleep. But the next day the little boy states the perfect resolution for the New Year. This is the fourteenth book in Wing's "The Night Before" series. Its cadence and rhyme scheme do a credible job of following that of "The Night Before Christmas." The illustrations show a happy family enjoying time with one another. That in itself would make a good New Year's resolution. Fans of the previous titles will enjoy this one, too. Readers new to the series will be looking for the others. Wing and Wummer know just what will appeal to young children and their parents. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
