I think this is the most emotional of the Envy stories so far. Selena is known at "the Death Lady" because she helps people who are near death cross over to the other side. This is emotionally and physically draining enough, but she is also called to help those the rest of what's left of society consider monsters--the zombies called gangas. Theo Waxnicki was injured at the end of the previous book and is brought to Selena's hospice ward with little hope of surviving. Although Theo has always been lucky--surviving the Change and aging very little over the past 50 years, it looks like his luck has finally run out, until Selena uses her gift in a unique way and brings Theo back to life. Theo and Selena share a deep connection and a serious attraction for one another. There are also answers to the overall mystery at Selena's compound that have been hidden for 50 years. The search into how the Change happened and who was behind it is suspenseful. It is also fun to see all the references to the popular culture of our time. While Night Betrayed had a satisfying ending, the story is far from over, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Envy Chronicles Book Four Theo lands in the home of the Death Lady after being shot by Seattle. Selena manages to resurrect him with her secret crystal and brings him back to health. Along with her son Simon, friend Frank and mother-figure Vonnie, Selena and Theo get back to life as usual...until he learns about Selena's secret. Meanwhile, Lou makes his way to find Theo, and Remy and Ian mix in with other bounty hunters to hide her identity. This book takes the reader away from Envy and into the lives of residents of other areas, giving another perspective on the change. Narration: Sebastian Fields narrates the series with fluidity and calm. He keeps the voices simple, yet distinctive. If you're looking for a book about redemption, heartache and the love that gets you through it, this is the book for you.

I've only read the 1st in the series "Beyond The Night", but Joss presents an interesting concept in the Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Romance genera. Good character development, action, susupense and romance.

My Review: For some reason, this book seems much harsher to me than the others in this series have been. I am guessing that the reason for that is because, in this book, we become much more familiar with the gangas (zombies) and what they actually are and how that have come into creation. In addition, this book focuses on Theo. Theo is an interesting character from this series. He was in Vegas with his twin brother when the Change (apocalypse) occurred, but his experience was different from his twin brother, Lou's. Theo was caught up and buried under some electronics (he and his brother, Lou, are computer geniuses,) which caused a change in his genetic make-up. Like the others caught in the cave in Sedona, Theo doesn't age and has a super-power...he can generate an electrical charge. I have read a lot of books where the characters were hundreds of years old while still maintaining their youth. But for some reason, in this book (not the series, because it hasn't bothered me in the other books,) it's not the same because you see both Lou & Theo together. They are twins. One is elderly. One is not. There's something just a bit creepy about it (for me) about the constant reinforcement that Theo should be elderly too. I know it's because of the twin thing, but it bothered me to constantly be thinking about him actually being elderly. It brings a focus on the shallowness of how we look at aging. On the other hand, we have Selena, who is also very youthful looking for her age of 50. That was never really explained except for the fact that she was born during the midst of the Change. As a result, she has her own special gift...the ability to help usher souls into the afterlife. She is known as the Death Lady because everyone brings her the dying and she helps to ease their transition. That's how she meets Theo. He is brought to her because he is dying. While I didn't like this one quite as much as I have the others in this series, this was still an interesting book. I think that the issues I had will be mine alone. I am excited to see where the series goes from here...especially with Remington Truth. I know that we should have at least 2 more books in the series...Wyatt & Fence. I am thinking/hoping that there may be a bit more there with Ian, because his character intrigues me, but I may be writing more into that storyline than there actually is. All I know is that I can't wait for more of these books to come out.

I don't write many reviews, but had to for this book. I have enjoyed this new world that Joss Ware has created.... unlike anything else I have read out there. The character developed is great as is the vividness of the word Joss brings to life through this series. I have read every book so far and eagerly await the next.

Selena "The Death Lady" was miraculously born during the Change. Her nickname comes from her unique ability to see the ghostly cloud that denotes that person is about to die. What makes her extraordinary is that she somehow helps the dying move on. Selena sees the cloud of a dying man. However, this time something strange occurs as a voice orders her to touch the corpse with her crystal. Somehow Theo Waxnicki, a Change survivor on a Strangers' mission, was shot to death; yet recovers in Selena's compound where he believes information on the world's destruction can be found. While his twin Lou frantically searches for him, Selena not only brings him back to life, she brings him back to live as feelings lost in the Change return to him. The latest Envy Chronicles (see Abandon the Night, Embrace the Night Eternal and Beyond the Night) is a superb mid twenty-first post apocalyptic romantic thriller. The story line is fast-paced and the cast especially the lead couple are a wonderful match. However, it is Ware world that makes for an engaging read as fans will believe they have been transported four decades into the future as places like Vegas, Arizona and elsewhere feel reasonably real.
