But for John Corey and Kate Mayfield, both members of the Elite Anti-terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspecting a cover-up at the highest levels and disobeying orders, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove the truth about what really happened to Flight 800--the videotape that shows a couple making love on the beach and the last moments of the doomed airliner.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Demille's latest is sure to be a #1 bestseller-but it's also sure to be controversial. The book is centered on an investigation of the July 1996 crash of flight TWA 800, "when... a big Boeing 747 bound for Paris with 230 passengers and crew on board, exploded off the Atlantic coast of Long Island, sending all 230 souls to their deaths." In July 2001, Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force detective John Corey, a brilliant, smart-ass detective last seen in Plum Island and The Lion's Game, accompanies his FBI agent wife, Kate Mayfield, to the fifth anniversary of the disaster. John, whose wife worked the crash in 1996, understands that Kate has brought him along because she doesn't buy the official finding of "mechanical failure" and wants him to mount his own investigation. There are 200 eyewitnesses who swear they saw a missile lift into the clear night sky and bring down the airplane, a charge dismissed by the CIA as an optical illusion. Though Corey is warned away from the investigation, like any good fictional detective, this only serves to spur him on. He uncovers evidence that a man and a woman, on the beach that fateful night videotaping their adulterous affair, inadvertently caught on tape the missile hitting the plane. The book is primarily about John tracking down the couple, but as the end nears, readers will begin to understand the perilous direction in which Demille is leading them. The pages will turn in a blur as a feeling of dread grows, until the end comes and one's worst fears are confirmed. Readers will think about this one for a long time. Agent, Nicholas Ellison. (Nov.) From The Critics
It's summer 2001, five years since TWA Flight 800 went down in the ocean under mysterious circumstances. The official explanation is mechanical failure, but John Corey and wife Kate Mayfield (last seen in The Lion's Game) suspect a cover-up involving a steamy videotape and a guided missile. Even though both Corey and Mayfield work for an antiterrorist task force made up of cops and CIA and FBI agents, there is resistance to their finding anything to contradict the official reports. As usual, DeMille spins a well-crafted, timely, and exciting tale. Corey is a cynical and sarcastic ex-cop who's been around the block at least once too often, while Mayfield is a straight-arrow FBI lawyer who wants desperately to do right for the dead of Flight 800. To do so, they must deal with sinister forces within their own government as they unknowingly count down to 9/11. Strongly recommended for most popular fiction collections. Meet the Author

Nelson DeMille
Nelson DeMille
With his taut, suspenseful, and well researched thrillers, Nelson DeMille has become one of the most popular writers working today, publishing bestseller after bestseller. In books such as Plum Island and Word of Honor, DeMille gives us breakneck plots featuring strong characters with difficult decisions to make, and readers can’t tear their eyes away.

Biography

Nelson DeMille has a dozen bestselling novels to his name and over 30 million books in print worldwide, but his beginnings were not so illustrious. Writing police detective novels in the mid-1970s, DeMille created the pseudonym Jack Cannon: "I used the pen name because I knew I wanted to write better novels under my own name someday," DeMille told fans in a 2000 chat.

Between 1966 and 1969, Nelson DeMille served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. When he came home, he finished his undergraduate studies (in history and political science), then set out to become a novelist. "I wanted to write the great American war novel at the time," DeMille said in an interview with January magazine. "I never really wrote the book, but it got me into the writing process." A friend in the publishing industry suggested he write a series of police detective novels, which he did under a pen name for several years.

Finally DeMille decided to give up his day job as an insurance fraud investigator and commit himself to writing full time -- and under his own name. The result was By the Rivers of Babylon (1978), a thriller about terrorism in the Middle East. It was chosen as a Book of the Month Club main selection and helped launch his career. "It was like being knighted," said DeMille, who now serves as a Book of the Month Club judge. "It was a huge break."

DeMille followed it with a stream of bestsellers, including the post-Vietnam courtroom drama Word of Honor (1985) and the Cold War spy-thriller The Charm School (1988) Critics praised DeMille for his sophisticated plotting, meticulous research and compulsively readable style. For many readers, what made DeMille stand out was his sardonic sense of humor, which would eventually produce the wisecracking ex-NYPD officer John Corey, hero of Plum Island (1997) and The Lion's Game (2000).

In 1990 DeMille published The Gold Coast, a Tom Wolfe-style comic satire that was his attempt to write "a book that would be taken seriously." The attempt succeeded, in terms of the critics' response: "In his way, Mr. DeMille is as keen a social satirist as Edith Wharton," wrote The New York Times book reviewer. But he returned to more familiar thrills-and-chills territory in The General's Daughter, which hit no. 1 on The New York Times' Bestseller list and was made into a movie starring John Travolta. Its hero, army investigator Paul Brenner, returned in Up Country (2002), a book inspired in part by DeMille's journey to his old battlegrounds in Vietnam.

DeMille's position in the literary hierarchy may be ambiguous, but his talent is first-rate; there's no questioning his mastery of his chosen form. As a reviewer for the Denver Post put it, "In the rarefied world of the intelligent thriller, authors just don't get any better than Nelson DeMille."

Good To Know

DeMille composes his books in longhand, using soft-lead pencils on legal pads. He says he does this because he can't type, but adds, "I like the process of pencil and paper as opposed to a machine. I think the writing is better when it's done in handwriting."

In addition to his novels, DeMille has written a play for children based on the classic fairy tale "Rumpelstiltskin."

DeMille says on his web site that he reads mostly dead authors -- "so if I like their books, I don't feel tempted or obligated to write to them." He mentions writing to a living author, Tom Wolfe, when The Bonfire of the Vanities came out; but Wolfe never responded. "I wouldn't expect Hemingway or Steinbeck to write back -- they're dead. But Tom Wolfe owes me a letter," DeMille writes.

The ending will give you goose bumps!! A total WOW!!

Like all the Corey stories, you'll be pulled in right from the beginning. Although fictional, the novel contains contemporary historical elements that make the story personal. It's a great ride -- enjoy.

    Loved, loved, loved it!

This is my third book by DeMille and my first about John Corey. If John were a real person, I think I'd be in love! His sense of humor and wit were terrific. The book itself was terrific, although I was a little disappointed in the ending. However, once I thought about it, I guess it was the only way DeMille could end it without adding about 400 more pages to the story. I loved this book and am looking foward to reading more about John Corey!

This was an excellent follow to the Lion Game, in the John Corey series. I found myself doing my own investigative research on Flight 800.

    more from this reviewer

The fun part of some of those conspiracy wackos is when, in fact, there is a good conspiracy going on.

This is the second DeMille I've read -- "The Gate House" was the other -- and I have enjoyed them both.

This proves the value of scouting the remainder table. The fun part of some of those conspiracy wackos is when, in fact, there is a good conspiracy going on. That is the premise of this "based on true events" novel. TWA Flight 800 explodes just a few minutes after take-off and after years of investigation there is the official explanation of accidental explosion due to faulty electrical wiring behind the main fuel tanks.

But when John Corey, re-energized by the 5th year anniversary of the deaths of the 230 aboard the doomed airliner, tries to seek some better answers, he is threatened by his supervisors in the FBI and CIA to drop it or else. As DeMille's story unfolds we are reminded how this disaster occurred nearly at the half-way point between the two World Trade Center bombings in 1993 and 2001. There are eye-witness accounts of a missile streaking toward the plane seconds before the explosion. Yet, no terrorist organization claimed responsibility. Was there an elusive piece of evidence?

The final showdown blends fiction and real-life in a most jarring way. Good read.

    Great Book. Ending Very Surprising.

For those of you who have read this book, you know how it ends, and I have to say, it is one of the best endings to a book I know if. Throughout the whole book you think you know it's coming, but then you second-guess yourself, and right when you think it won't happen, it does. Great read
It's my third DeMille book. My friend reccomened Plum Island for me and I finished it in 2 days. I could't put it down. When I heard there were other Corey books, I had to read them. I read The Lion's Game which was awesome and I had to get Night Fall. I am very happy with my purchase. The only reason I do give this book a four and not a five is because the story can become slow at times. It does not have as much adventure as the other two I read, but it had more than enough.

    A Wild and Intriguing Ride

If you want a book that you won't be able to put down this book is it. From the first chapter to the last Mr. DeMille presents the characters in a way that you feel you know them personally and along the way rooting for the good guys and cursing the bad guys. Mr. DeMille makes one wonder about the clear and present danger of terrorism and what actually happened to TWA Flight 800.

    My First Demille Book

I usually read James Patterson, but for Christmas someone gave me this book. The beginning started off with a lot of text about the flight, what happened, witnesses, ect...kind of boring stuff at first, but stick with it because it turned out to be one of the best books I've read! Great characters (John Corey) and his supporting cast was great too. I will be reading Plum Island next, it is another John Corey book. I strongly recommend this book and I think I will be a Nelson Demille fan for a long time. Being from Long Island, its even better reading these books (because the situations and location are from here).

    A Decent Book

This is just another book about another conspiracy . It is about the TWA/800 crash off the coast of NY. This book is definately a page turner, but it had more profane language than I would have liked. At times the story becomes a little far-fetched and hard to believe and towards the middle of the book it gets a little long and just a little booring but it slowly picks up again. It still has a decent storyline though. The thing I didn't like was the ending. I was hoping that it would be better, it kind of leaves you hanging, But it is worth reading regardless.

    I couldn't put it down!

I wasn't sure I'd like to read a book that takes the tragedy and controversy of TWA Flight 800 and ends up with a work of fiction. But it was done ia a heart-felt and sincere way. I found it one of the most gripping books I've read in a long time.

    GREAT READ!

I bought this to take on my trip to Europe but I could not read it-(Flight TWA 800 disaster-)until I returned safely back to the USA. HA When I finally started it, I could not put it down! John Corey is one of my favorites in a series! He makes me laugh outloud! I got my husband hooked on his books now too. We can hardly wait for Wildfire to come out in Nov ('06) We will probably fuss over who reads it first! HA- I too was not really happy with the ending of Nightfall, and I'm hoping Wildfire will answer some questionable situations. But I would definitely recommend this book if you love a good laugh along with an 'edge of your seat,' 'page-turning,' 'thriller-mystery!' Keep in mind this book is set 5yrs later -after the TWA disaster- in the year 2001. And if you love John Corey, you gotta read Plum Island too! My husband enjoyed Lions Game also.

    Ending is a big disappointment

This book would have deserved a ***** had it ended logically. Alex Demille (son of Nelson, who has recommended the ending) needs to understand what the readers want. I am a big fan of John Corey and his sarcastic humour. But he also must have felt cheated.

    I'm hopeful.....

Loved the book and hope that Mr. DeMille will write a possible sequel that will research WHO got the tape from the hotel safe, did she possibly make it out of the World Trade Center and pick up the tape and disappear??? Could be interesting to see where John Corey's twisted and wonderful mind might look for her and the tape.....just a thought. Love DeMille and all his books! Will be first in line for the next one!

    Real Demille Fan Felt Cheated

I could not put this book down. I love all of Demille's books. My favorite is Gold Coast. This one definately would have been my second favorite had he taken the time to write an ending. The experience for me was like watching the most exciting movie in the world and having the DVD break write before I experienced an ending. Still, I hate to see anyone miss what a terrific story he was building. So read it, but prepare yourself for no resolution in the end.

    Too much dialogue

I am just getting started, I am an avid reader however, I am up to page 155 & I so far, don't care for it. I find there is too much dialogue, too much conversations at times, silly, I am going to stick with it because I have read DeMille before & I enjoyed his books, so I hope this will get better. I prefer books without too much conversation & more descriptive

    Great Book

This is my first time for a John Corey novel. I listened to the audio and Scott Brick was excellent. I loved the fact that this novel was fiction but based on fact. I think the author did an excellent job researching all the events that went into this novel. There was humor (loved Corey's sense of humor) and sadness by the two tradgies that occurred. This novel has me thinking.
