Jenkins, famous for historical romances featuring black characters (Captured; Belle), stumbles with this tale set in the turbulent American South of 1889. When Ian Vance, a bounty hunter turned U.S. deputy marshal, sees Maggie Freeman on a Kansas train platform, he’s struck by her defiant manner. Maggie defended herself against sexual assault and is on her way to stand trial in Kansas City, but no Southern judge would allow a black woman who killed a white man to walk free. Ian falls in love with her fighting spirit and sense of humor, and Maggie is intrigued by his law degree, Scottish and African heritage, and years as an outlaw. As Ian and Maggie dodge the law and travel to his Wyoming ranch, she piles on heavy-handed, disruptive lessons in African-American history. The romance either rushes or drags, and while the protagonists are quirky and engaging, the delightful side characters repeatedly steal the show. (Nov.)

Ian Vance Bigelow may have started out his life as the illegitimate grandson of a Scottish Laird but he rose to become a Bounty Hunter and US Marshall known as the Preacher. Ian was as full of the Holy Spirit as he was weapons and would use both as the situation deemed appropriate. When this tough bounty hunter collides with Maggie Freeman a sassy spitfire of a woman, he is not sure what hit him. Maggie is under arrest for a crime she did not commit and Ian is trying to haul her from one part of the country to the next to get the issue resolved. He did not ask for this job but on the way back to Wyoming he might as well take care of her and get a train ride out of the deal. However, Maggie is not going quietly onto that train and her goal is escape not some trumped up charge she cannot beat. Both Maggie and Ian know of discrimination and disgrace brought upon them by simple being people of color who are specifically of mixed descent. Both of them have taken the cards they have been dealt and made a respectable life for themselves. The predetermined mindset of people has been used, as life lessons not something to weigh them down but make them who they have become. The journey on the train is tough with every city having a story and the people they meet sharing their history. The time draws out with one train after another but the more they are together the more Ian and Maggie realize they are meant to be together. But the past always comes back to find you and when it does will it be the salvation of this couple or the undoing? This book will have readers sighing over the romance and amazed by the historical significance of the story, unable to put the book down. Beverly Jenkins is brilliant at rolling history around an historical romance with characters that make us aware of how much those before us had to overcome to bring us to the place we are today.

"Night Hawk" by Beverly Jenkins is a romantic tale that is woven together expertly. Ian Vance who is also known as Preacher is fighting is own demons. Preacher dealing with the death of his mother and never knowing is father and meeting is grandfather for the first meets Maggie. Maggie Freeman, can't believe her luck. Losing both her parents and fighting just to survive is arrested for murder. It doesn't matter that the murder was an accident that occurred as she was trying to protect herself. As Maggie was being transported for her safety, here comes Preacher. Their meeting is one of chance but they soon find out that they are what each other need. Preacher is typically what every women want. A protector and savior. He comes riding on his horse to Maggie's rescue. Maggie is a strong willed women but she knows when to allow her Preacher Man to be a man. Once the two get together it is steamy and sensual. And you will find yourself cheering and excited for their love. Beverly Jenkins has done an excellent job with "Night Hawk". She gives you just enough history that if you haven't read anything about Preacher before you can't wait to pick up the prior books. She tells a story with her characters that you can actually picture them and feel them. The scenes unfold as if you are watching them on the big screen.

Good reading for the most part. I think it could have ended a little sooner than it did, but Enjoyed reading about characters different from mainstream. Ian and Maggie had interesting histories and wound up together through all the rejections of life. I love a good "lived happily ever after" story.

In 1889, former bounty hunter U.S. deputy marshal Ian "Preacher" Vance believes his soul died when his wife was murdered. A hybrid Scot and Black, Ian reassesses his self assumed death of feeling when he sees lovely Maggie Freeman standing in cuffs on a Kansas station waiting for the train bound to Kansas City. His job is to escort the proud defiant Maggie, a hybrid like him with her mixed black and Indian blood, to a circuit judge to stand trial for the murder of a white man. She insists he was only defending herself from a sexual assault. However, though he believes her declaration, he knows a non-white female will hang regardless of her self defense claim that rings true. As they fall in love, Ian plans to keep his woman safe on his Wyoming ranch; but he thought her past not his will catch up to them. The latest Beverly Jenkins Black Americana historical romance (see Captured) is a fabulous late nineteenth century thriller as the reader learns justice is myopic when it comes to an accused person of color especially if the so called victim is white. The protagonists are a delightful pairing of two strong proud people with her adding a sense of humor while the support cast enhances the look at race relations on the Great Plains in 1889. This is another puissant entry by the Queen of African American historical romances. Harriet Klausner

I fell in love with Beverly Jenkins from the first book I read of hers years ago.  Night Hawk is my second favorite book, (Before the Dawn, being the first).  First, let me just say that Ms. Jenkins sure knows how to draw your attention to a "pretty package."  That is exactly what "Night Hawk" is.  I've a very vivid imagination  and what I love about reading is that it's like going on a mini vacation.  I love the way Ms. Jenkins gives the readers a bit of history.  Having many different blood lines run through my veins I truly appreciate the history lessons.  With Beverly, you never know what part of history you'll get next.  I also love how all of her heroines are very feminine but strong as an ox  and just as graceful in their own rite.  Thank you Ms. Jenkins for giving us Night Hawk.

Night Hawk by Beverly Jenkins is a fascinating read that is totally engaging, humorous and educational in the same punch.  This is basically the story of Preacher....Vance Bigelow, the bible quoting bounty hunter that always gets the job done.  After returning from his homeland, for the final time, he is put in the situation of transporting a prisoner to another jurisdiction for her safety.  This prisoner, Mattie Freeman brings to light sundry things and events that humor him as well as keep him very much on his toes.  Some of these wonderful and lively characters fully engage and entertain you.  LOVE IT!!!!

I really enjoy reading Bev's Historical Romantic NOvels and this one is no exception. All of her Characters are African-American and the period of the 19th century is her focus. You will love her books if you love history as I do. The characters are interesting and will keep you tuned into reading. I only wish she would write more of them since I think I have read all she had written during this period so far and I still want more. Keep them coming Bev!
