It's Christmas Eve, and Louis's favorite stuffed animal, Lamb, couldn't be more excited. While Louis is asleep, Lamb tiptoes downstairs and climbs into Santa's great big bag of presents. Inside is a magical world, filled with new friends: other toys waiting to be delivered as gifts. But soon Lamb starts to miss Louis, and he worries he will never make his way back home. Fortunately, Santa is there to save the day, and Louis is just a short sleigh ride away.

Tim Jessell's exuberant art and Kristin Kladstrup's lively writing create a Christmastime world that you won't want to leave.

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
While Louis is asleep, Lamb creeps out to see Santa and tiptoes into Santa's bag. There he discovers more toys than in a toy store. When Santa's hand reaches in for one toy after another, the other toys shout "Good-bye" Lamb tells a nervous toy backhoe how Louis digs up rocks and sand with his backhoe. The backhoe gives Lamb a ride through Santa's bag. Lamb reassures a jigsaw puzzle that it will be put back together. He tells an engine that it needs to be at the front of the train cars. Soon Lamb is left alone. Santa remembers bringing Lamb to Louis when he was only a baby. Lamb says, "Please don't give me to somebody else!" Santa assures him he will take him back to Louis in Santa's sleigh. "Lamb thought he remembered, just a little, coming to that house a long time ago." Santa again put Lamb into Louis's stocking. Lamb will tell Louis all about it in the morning. Bright back-lighted illustrations show a sweet Lamb, other toys, and a florid Santa. Children will enjoy this simple story and bright pictures. Gr 13—After Louis tells his favorite toy, Lamb, about Santa's bag of goodies, the stuffed animal sneaks downstairs on Christmas Eve to get a peek—and accidentally ends up in the big man's sack. Lamb chats and plays with all the other toys and tells them what to expect from their new owners, and it isn't until he is alone that he worries that he might end up with someone other than Louis. Lamb is a good-hearted protagonist, and the colorful, festive illustrations give this rather pedestrian tale a bit of saving charm.—Linda Israelson, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews

A stuffed lamb is the favorite toy of a little boy named Louis, who falls asleep quickly on Christmas Eve. Lamb waits up for Santa, falls into his bag and is whisked off in the sleigh with all the other toys awaiting delivery. Inside the giant sack, Lamb interacts with the new toys throughout the night, until he is the only toy left. Will he be given to some other child? No, Santa flies him home to be reunited with Louis on Christmas morning. The story is utterly predictable, and while some children will find Lamb sweet, others will think him babyish. The illustrator uses glowing strings of Christmas lights and a variety of dramatic perspectives to create a magical atmosphere, but he cannot add enough luster to make this one a keeper.
