While "Night Lights" would be perfect for a romantic evening, it also stands up well to serious examination. The original Philips vinyl LP is fairly rare now, but was one of my most valued jazz albums. It sure is nice that the jazz catalog CD re-issue wave is including this beautiful work of art. Bobby Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Jim Hall on guitar, Art Farmer on trumpet and of course Gerry Mullgan on baritone sax are at the top of their form in this early 1960's small big band date. This was recorded shortly after the Concert Jazz Band period for Mulligan and further testifies to his abilities as a top-notch arranger. You might also check out these earlier big band recordings on Verve - Gerry Mulligan and The Concert Jazz Band "Live At The Village Vanguard" is the one most accessible currently, although there are others to be found on CD. This reissue of the Philips label LP is quite welcome. You'll love this music as a perfect mood-setting background for a quiet evening with your lover or for ''later in the evening'' party music. I enjoy this disc for the musicianship, as will most Mulligan fans, or just fans of great jazz. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
