Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Easing tired youngsters toward their appointed pillows can be a marathon project for parents, but this Sandra Boynton board book might help get them on the way. The humorous, rhymed story is short and pleasantly simple: Little piggy Pookie is tired, but he needs to be steered to bed, and by the end of the book, he's happily off to dreamland.
Children's Literature
Little Pookie, young anthropomorphic pig of other Boynton adventures, is told that it is time for bed. And so begins a typical bedtime dialog between mother and little one. Mother finds the hiding Pookie. He then chooses between two pairs of pajamas—half from each—brushes his teeth, hides under the covers for a surprise, and receives his three kisses goodnight. Brief rhymes, with parenthetical comments, lead to the peaceful tucking in. The final pages in this board book are filled with love, just right to read before sleep. The simplicity of the text is complemented by the deceptively simple colored drawings. Few props are needed to follow the actions shown sometimes in vignettes and in two double-page scenes. The focus is on the expressive faces and the obvious affection between mother and child. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton
Sandra Boynton is the beloved author and illustrator of over 40 books, with over 20 million of them in print. Since 1975, her incomparable greeting cards have sold well over 200 million copies. She has a Grammy nomination, has written and produced three gold records, and her books for children and for adults have won numerous awards. She is the recipient of the 2008 Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Cartoonists Society’s highest honor. She lives and works and goofs off in the foothills of the Berkshires with her husband, whitewater racer/expeditionist Jamie McEwan, and their four perfect children.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

    Just too cute!

We had to buy the second book because the first one was worn out! My daughter (3) wants me to read this book to her every night.

    good bedtime story

I bought this book for my 18mo old daughter to add variety for bedtime readings. She loves it! It is simple, easy to follow along, and catchy. So far, she hasn't gotten tired of it. It's a great value and great for putting the little one to sleep.

    Read first in Bedtime Line-up

This is a cute little story about avoiding bedtime. I really like Sandra Boynton's books. The illustrations are simple and the texts cute. Pookie can stir up little ones so you might want to have it first in your nightime reading pile.

    Sweet ending

Not my favorite Sandra Boynton book, but that being said....my two year old BEGS for it every night. The ending is so sweet where you are kissing your child and telling him/her how much you love him/her over and over.

    Pookie's Tired

Pookie's at it again in this latest from the series from Sandra Boynton. All the things you loved about Pookie before are still there, except this time, it's bedtime. A fun and warm bedtime story made even more dear with the help of Little Pookie.
