Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Devotees of the Forgotten Realms series know that R.A. Salvatore created Drizzt Do'Urden for his first novel on a whim, and that in the quarter century since, his spontaneous creation has become one of the most popular and endearing characters in the history of fantasy literature. In fact, all eighteen novels featuring Drizzt have become coast-to-coast bestsellers. In his latest welcome incarnation, this likeable hero and his friends risk the dangers of the Underdark to rescue Bruenor's faithful shield dwarf-turned-vampire. A truly epic adventure; now in mass-market paperback and NOOK Book.

Meet the Author

R.A. Salvatore

R.A. Salvatore is the New York Times best-selling author of more than forty novels, including the popular Forgotten Realms series The Legend of Drizzt. He's an avid gamer, father of three, and loyal citizen of Red Sox Nation.

Good To Know

Well, I just turned 50, but I'm still a clean-up hitter on the softball field. A couple of years ago, I found myself in horrible shape and feeling lousy all the time, and so, with the help of my wonderful and beautiful wife of 25 years, I started taking my health seriously again. Now I feel better than I did when I was 40. Fit Camp three times a week and yoga and softball and all the rest.

The other thing that I've come to learn about myself is that R. A. Salvatore and Bobby Salvatore are two different people (and I much prefer Bobby, thank you very much). It's not that I lie to readers at book signings, or anything like that, it's just that the things that are important to me are the little things in life: my family, my home. Writing is what I do, but it's not who I am. I remember one time about 20 years ago, I went back to where I had worked to see my brother, who still worked there. Gary was a few years older, and was, of course, my hero. An associate found us in the parking lot and nudged my brother, asking him what it felt like to have a younger brother who was so much more successful than he.

Gary, of course, took it all in stride, turning what might have been an awkward moment into a joke. Gary died a few years later and I'll never forget the lines of mourners -- grown men crying like babies. He was such a big part of the community, as a friend and a coach to so many kids over the years.

That brought me back to the parking lot and the awkward moment, and the truth of it all: I was not and have never been more successful than my brother, and nothing I can do as a writer will get me there. Only the things I do as a human being, a father, a neighbor, a friend, can bring me into his league.

As many of the sundering series do, the book starts slow as the characters are introduced and the environment is established. Then all hell breaks loose as the battles are interrupted only for political intrigue. The descriptions are vivid, the suspense continues right up to the end, and the reunited companions do themselves proud as their quest continues. Although I have read all the books in this series, the story is complete and stands by itself for the new reader. I recommend it for an exciting story in a strange and wondrous land. Human nature seems to be the same, even when many of the characters are not humans.

    Great Book

This book really brings back the spirit of R.A. Salvatore and Drizzt. It was much better then any of the last few books. It was perfectly laced with politics, fights, and story; and I can't say im not happy the companions are back. "Ye durned elf!"

    Meh.

The 2 stars is actually for nostalgia as the book maybe deserves only one. I have loved these characters for 20 years now but I do need more than the same charcters doing the same things in the same locations to enjoy reading them anymore. Has Salvatore moved to allowing his son to ghost write this series, to get some experience? If not, he's just run out of anything new to say in regards to the story and characters (which is understandable). If so, kinda sucks to pay for an author's work and not get it...for whatever reason.

I've been reading the Drizzt books from the beginning... this DOESN'T DISAPPOINT!

Mr Salvatore has managed to come up with some INTERESTING possibilities for NEW STORY ARCS! (Without SPOILING ANYTHING) a few are REGIS' new ABILITIES(he's integrated with some of the new RACES made available with the new edition of FORGOTTEN REALMS!!!) CATTI-BRIE'S NEW ABILITIES... new DROW possibilities... cities etc... I'm looking forward to the continuing adventures in the world of THE SUNDERING!!!

    Shame

If it werent for an entire chapter talking about how goblinkin arent really people in an argument that sounds a lot like the justification people used for the slave trade, eugenics or the holocaust, this book would be five stars.

This book and the latest in "THE SUNDERING" series were AWESOME! But I do have ONE little PROBLEM... I like the way the new Realms are shaping up... but the use of "LESBIAN THEMES" is what got me! Are you going to use MALE homosexual innuendo as WELL? Or is this just a CHEAP PLOY to appeal to ADOLESCENT MALES??? If you DO have male GAYS in your stories I will RETRACT my complaint... but if you haven't PLANNED on it... I am VERY disappointed!!! Especially with a character like DRIZZT who is a CHAMPION for being against RACISM and DISCRIMINATION!!!
