Night on My Sideby Gemma Hayes
Night on My Side, Gemma Hayes's confident debut, slides effortlessly from stirring electric passion to lilting acoustic tenderness, sometimes within the space of one song. Hayes grew up in Ireland, and she's an avowed My Bloody Valentine fan, but she's also a singer-songwriter at heart, penning introspective, emotional confessions. The U.S. version of Night on My Side resequences the original import into "Day" and "Night" halves and includes several EP tracks. By "Day," Hayes is a rocker: "Let a Good Thing Go" and "Work to a Calm" build on dense, crashing power chords; "Back of My Hand" uses a New Orderlike guitar line; and "Lucky Girl" begins with a quiet drone that gradually crescendos into a wall of sound. By "Night," however, Hayes is a chilled-out folkie relying on acoustic guitars and quiet keyboards. Credit Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev) and David Odlum (The Frames), who helped Hayes produce the album, with keeping the schizophrenic effect to a minimum by weaving subtle layers of effects throughout. The softly pulsing "I Wanna Stay" and the sparse ruminations of "My God" call to mind Beth Orton, and the soulful "Ran for Miles" and beautiful "4:35 A.M." show that Hayes is truly a night owl. Night supersedes Day, barely, but Gemma Hayes is alluring around the clock.

"Night On My Side" is sequenced so that the first of the half is rock music (suited for the day) and the second half is very chill and folkie (suited for night). Anyway, the album is amazing with gorgeous lyrics (Writte by Ms. Hayes herself) and beautiful guitars (also by Ms. Hayes). Pick up this album, you won't be disappointed!
I picked up the UK version of "Night on my Side" while in England 2 years ago, and was blown away! I've been excitedly waiting for her to get some recognition state-side, and I'm sure she will soon! This album has a dreamy, yet grainy quality that drills its way into your mind and heart. Her lyrics are open and honest, which perfectly match her sweet voice.
