Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Part of the National Audubon Society's "First Field Guide" series, this reference book is divided into four sections. A brief introduction describes astronomy and astronomers, and including a few paragraphs about Maria Mitchell, the first female astronomy professor. Because prehistoric man is known to have studied the night sky, astronomy is identified as the oldest science. The next thirty pages present all of the components of the universe as we see them in the sky today--our sun, the planets in our solar system, and the groupings of stars known as constellations. Illustrations and photographs are used to describe the various objects, their patterns of movement, and their relationships with each other. There is a star map for each season that provides the location of the various constellations at a given time. Most of the field guide is devoted to locating and identifying the constellations. A glossary, solar system tables, and list of web, video and software resources are included in this handy, small size, book.
