    Minor Goodis

Admittedly, I'm a little late coming to the table with the works of David Goodis. It wasn't until Hard Case Crime reprinted "The Wounded And The Slain" some three or four years ago that I became interested in the man and his noir-tinged stories of low-down desperation and redemption.

Compared to, say, "Nightfall" or "The Moon In The Gutter," "Night Squad" is something of a let-down. Those forgotten, forlorn characters he wrote so well, though they exist here, are hardly worth much mention. The story is straight up crime, and unfortunately unravels rather quickly due to amateurish plotting and predictability. An ex-cop is hired by a small-time crime boss to uncover the identity of an opposing faction who attempted to assassinate him. Along the way, our anti-hero tangles with a couple of blondes, thugs, and barroom philosophers. The cops are watching him, the mob is watching him...

Despite Goodis' talent for exposing the sorriest, worst of humanity within the cob-webby corners of his hometown, and the occasional sparky bits of dialog, "Night Watch" is better left in the hands of Goodis fanatics and pulp devotees.
