As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.
For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."
Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.
Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."
Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."
Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

I loved Night Tales! I just couldn't put it down! I read the entire thing in 3 days! And when I finished it, I picked it back up and started back at the beginning again! I've read the book at least 5 or 6 times!

Pleasant - although this is not one of Nora Robert's best books in my opinion, it was not bad either. Entertaining is a good adjective to describe this book. The first story was good, the second had to grow on me - I'm not to keen on people with 'super' powers, the third and fourth stories were enjoyable. Overall it's a nice read -

What a waste of this reader's time. The first one was OK, the second tale was good. By the third they were so boring I kept falling asleep. I just did not care what happened to the 'night' characters anymore. I put the book down and moved on to something better.

I just finished this book and can't wait to read Night Shield. I have to wonder if the characters in Night Shadow gave her the inspiration for her mystery series with Eve Dallas and Roarke (written as J.D. Robb). If you like mysteries (with a touch of romance) read those books!

This series was such a delight to read! Romance, humor and suspense....all those wonderful things that keep you from putting the book down! These have it all. I have practically every book that Nora Roberts has written and would not give them up for anything. Many try to imitate her work, but there is just one Nora Roberts!

Nora Roberts absolutely surpassed herself in the compelling book 'Night Tales.' I was unable to ajourn this book from the moment I started reading it. This is one of Nora Robert's most enthralling novels I've read yet!

Like one of the reviewers, I read an excerpt from this book in Cosmopolitan Magazine. Every month, I want to read the book they do an excerpt on. Therefore, I purchased the book. I haven't yet finished the novel; however, I can't seem to put it down. I'm 400 pages into it and have spent several nights forcing myself to go to sleep. It's a wonderful read. Not only is there romance but mystery as well. She is an excellent author, and I can't wait to read another novel from her.

I don't usually pick up a romance novel, but I had read a piece of this book in my Cosmo magazine. I found myself going nuts looking for another page of it, but it was just a teaser (advertisement). I was floored by just how much I enjoyed that little piece. I am still in the process of reading this lovely book. If I didn't have to come to work, I would have finished it for sure as well as being on my way to purchase another Nora Robert's novel. This book has a captavating series of stories. I have to agree with the other reviewer, I just love Cilla. Hey Slick, where are you baby!!!

I'm on the last book, Night Smoke, and it is so hard to put down!! I loved them all so far and I was so excited to hear another night tales story (Night Shield) was out too! I love Nora Roberts books!

I am now a devoted fan of Nora Roberts! I had never read any of her work before this book, but I am hooked... Well written, engrossing, you name it, this book had it, much to my surprise. While I loved all of her stories, I am going to be having dreams about Gage Guthrie for months! Night Shadow is far and away the best story in this book, perfect for those of us who read comic books as kids.

I just got the book two days ago and couldn't put it down. I love every book in it, but I especially love Nightshade. This is the first book of hers that I've read and I can't wait to read more.

I loved every last story in this book. I wish someone would get a clue and make a movie out of at least one of Nora Roberts books, particularly this one or The MacGregors.

Each new story seemed better than the last but after finishing the book - they were ALL my favorites! Each book was so well written - this is one I will keep and read again (something I rarely do)!!
