For the first time ever, Samhain Publishing will serialize a terrifying original novel, Savage Species, in five installments, with new installments coming every two weeks. Here, as a special introduction to the fear that awaits you in Savage Species, is the first section, Night Terrors, absolutely free!

Jesse thinks he’s caught a break when he, the girl of his dreams, and her friend are assigned by their newspaper to cover the opening weekend of the Peaceful Valley Nature Preserve, a sprawling, isolated state park. But the construction of the park has stirred an evil that has lain dormant for nearly a century, and the three young people—as well as every man, woman, and child unlucky enough to be attending the grand opening—are about to encounter the most horrific creatures to ever walk the earth. A species so ferocious that Peaceful Valley is about to be plunged into a nightmare of bloodshed and damnation.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Janz (The Sorrows) tries his hand at a serialized novel, but this initial chapter (of a planned five) ends with an arbitrary cutoff rather than a solid conclusion. That said, fans of old-school splatterpunk horror—Janz cites Richard Laymon as an influence, and it shows—will find much to relish, if little that’s new. In western Indiana, a valley is turned into a nature preserve, and monstrous creatures are released into it. Half of the story follows housewife Charly, stuck with an abusive, philandering husband, whose baby is kidnapped by one of these creatures. The other follows young horndog journalist Jesse (covering the preserve’s opening with two colleagues), who stumbles across the monsters as they begin their massacre. Janz hits the genre’s high points—gory brutality, a large cast of characters/potential victims—but no Laymon callback is less necessary than making the wendigo-like creatures rapists as well as carnivores. Night Terrors
    by Jonathan Janz
Peaceful Valley sounds like a wonderful place to live or visit but there is something horribly wrong with the area.
This serial story begins the tale of mayhem and murder. Mr. Janz writes a compelling story that keeps you on the edge of your seat and is graphic enough to give you nightmares. There is a diverse group of characters that have storylines that are woven together as they all converge on Peaceful Valley for one reason or another. As they discover that things aren’t what they seem, violence ensues.
This is a serial story which means that we only get a taste of the whole story. Night Terrors is the first in the series and certainly a must if you are going to read the series. It sets the stage for all the future books and introduces you to the characters. I loved the anticipation and violence. It’s sure to be a horror must-have!

Wow. I was not expecting this.

For a free story this is really, really good. I wasn't sure about getting the rest of the sections but now can't wait to read them. Awesome story and three dimensional characters. Highly recommended!

Not for the Faint of Heart...

...is apropos for this five-part ebook serial, set in a vast state park and campground. Three young journalists attend to interview for a story about the new park, but they're unaware and unprepared for the brutal and unrelenting horror that's about to be unleashed. Early buzz compares this to the legendary late Richard Laymon, but Janz is in a class by himself. Part One ends with a bloody bang, making this reader immediately seek out Part Two!

First off, I enjoyed the book. Buyer beware, either the author, publisher or B&N have done an awful job of marketing the books and the order they are in. If you enjoy the first book, NIGHT TERRORS, purchase the books 2-5 via SAVAGE SPECIES. I liked the first book so much, I immediantly went online and purchased all of the rest. Nowhere on the site does it state all the books are contained in SAVAGE SPECIES. So I purchased all the books when all I needed to do was purchase SAVAGE SPECIES. Now these were ebooks, so only talking about $6, but still was a disappointment never the less.
