Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

"After the sharp-eyed jay and the roaring lion, peace will come on dove's gentle wing." This mysterious prophecy looms over the third installment of Erin Hunter's Omen of the Star Warriors feline fantasy series. Entries on the website of one of the authors indicates that a new point-of-view will be revealed in this novel.

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Since the 2003 launch of this popular fantasy series, more than thirty "Warriors" books have been written about these feral cats—including novels, mangas, special editions, and field guides. Wonder how one woman does it all? Truth is, she doesn't. "Erin Hunter" is the pen name of series originator Vicky Holmes and collaborators Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, and Tui Sutherland. Vicky develops all of the characters and storylines and provides them to her writers, then edits the manuscripts to ensure consistency of authorial voice and story arc. It seems an effective strategy for this authorial team, as they draw heartfelt feline characters who wrestle with remarkably human problems and concerns like family, commitment, honesty, and devotion as they struggle with clan affiliations, territorial conflicts and survival. This book is the third addition to the "Omen of the Stars" line in the "Warriors" feline fantasy series. Although the authors provide some background of the events from the previous book, readers would better start (at least) with the first "Omen of the Stars" book. Series fans will appreciate the inclusion of an adventure game at the book's end—and should be sure to check out the online game available at warriorcats.com, too. This story spotlights Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Dovepaw in their attempts to protect the clans from the evil, secretive cats of the Dark Forests. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. In addition to having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers and Survivors series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    Stop...

Okay, I love this book. Its very sad, action packed, and funny... I would recommend this for 6 graders and up. Next, stop roleplaying! There is an actual website where all of you obsessive jerks can roleplay 24/7. This isn't a chat room, its for reviews! You guys are selfish jerks, people want info about this book, not dumb clans like Moonclan. Everyone just roleplays... Hi, I'm Whirlpool of Thunderclan, and I need a mate, blah blah blah. Erghh, it gets me frustrated when you people say, Fireclan needs a med cat. Or, I'm giving birth! I seriously don't care. And so do other people. Look, if your reading this and you do roleplay, just quit doing it! Its just like spamming but 100x annoying. If you don't roleplay, but you are reading this. I do not blame you. A nook, or nookcolor is for reading, not roleplaying. So quit being a moron and get a life! Life isn't about Warriors fantasy land! So that is my message to all of you dumb spammers..............Bye......

    Say What Now

Everyone is saying that Icecloud and Lionblaze are going to end up together, but I think Cinderheart and Lionblaze are going to end up together considering the walk they just took. Anyway there are many questions that still are to be answered. One of these questions are Did Firestar lose one life or two?

Say what now- this can't happen!!!

Many people belive that icecloud and lionblaze will be together. i read the last book and i think cinderheart and lionblaze will be together. but how will lionblaze be able to have a mate in the nursery, with kits. guess who tigerstar would try to train. lionblaze's kits would be a total disadvantage if tigerstar got a hold of them. what would lionblaze do? would he fight on the side of his clanmates and starclan, or the dark forest simply because he didn't want to fight his kits? and would he pay more attention to his kits and mate or to the prophecy? and will brambleclaw ever forgive squirelflight and leafpool??

    Erin Hunter reviews

In this book, Jayfeather and Lionblaze are currently trying to find out the truth about what the battle was really about. Dovepaw is enraged when she hears that Ivypaw is visiting the Dark Forest and instantly tells her to stop. Ivypaw thinks she's just saying it because she doesnt want her to become a better warrior than her, so she refuces. But the Dark Forest is more than just training her like she thinks. Soon she will learn the secret the hard way. - Spottedtalon - Windclan

    Reminders (ps im EXCITEDDDDDD xD)

caught up in the whole dark forest rising thing and the main characters, alot of people have forgotten some things that were never tied up that should in the next 4 books.
A: Hollyleaf. we have no clue whatsoever on what happened to her, is she alive, where she is, who shes with, etc. she was a main character in power of three and i have a feeling we're not done with her just yet.
B: Sol. he left shadowclan in long shadows.. the patrol didnt find him. so where did he go? what does he know about the entire prophecy? sol still exists, and he knows some pretty important things, so keep him in mind.
C: midnight. in sunrise midnight wasnt at her den, and her scent was stale. where was she? what else does she know that she told sol? shes been very important, and it would be strange to forget about her.
D: new deputies? leopardstar died, so mistyfoot took over and became mistystar, yet they never mentioned who her new deputy was. then russetfur died at the end, so blackstar has to name a new one as well. we've seen how deputies have affected clan interaction (coughcoughtigerstarcough) and who is given that promotion could effect this war pending between the clan cats and the dark forest.

im done for now, but it should be a good book. i want to see many of these things start to become clearer.

also hi to all my iceclan friends, i know i havent been on in a while, sorta kind busy u might say.

    hawkcloud out.
