All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
Definitely borrowing its title from the Imagination remix album released in 1983, Night Dubbin'' is another joint venture between Dimitri from Paris and the BBE label, the same partnership that produced Disco Forever and The Kings of Disco. This time, Dimitri puts the focus on post-disco R&B, particularly the dub-inspired remixes that took up residence on many a 12" B-side throughout the early ''80s. Dim picked the 21 tracks presented unmixed on two discs (including his own mix of Imagination''s "Changes"), while longtime contemporaries the Idjut Boys put together a 74-minute DJ mix, recorded live with effects, incorporating 15 of the tracks from the bag. Dim picked the 21 tracks presented unmixed on two discs (including his own mix of Imagination''s "Changes"), while longtime contemporaries the Idjut Boys put together a 74-minute DJ mix, recorded live with effects, incorporating 15 of the tracks from the bag. The spotlight shines on those who remixed the selections, like François Kevorkian, Paul Simpson, and the team of John Morales and Sergio Munzibai (M&M Productions), most of whom are interviewed in the accompanying booklet. Applying the techniques pioneered by reggae giants like King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry -- reverb, delay, flanging, other assorted processes and effects -- these figures took the original mixes they were given, emerged from studios up to 20 hours later, and generated hypnotic, mind-bending versions often favored over the A-sides by club DJs. While nothing here is a certifiable classic (on the whole, it''s closer to a digging excursion than anything else), the package is nonetheless essential for anyone with a moderate interest in post-disco R&B, or anyone whose ears perk up when hearing the phrase "dub disco."
