“We all become lost children at one time or another. When no one else can find us, we must find ourselves.”
– Olivia

Bron Jones was abandoned at birth. Thrown into foster care, he was rejected by one family after another, until he met Olivia, a gifted and devoted high-school teacher who recognized him for what he really was--what her people call a "nightingale."

But Bron isn't ready to learn the truth. There are secrets that have been hidden from mankind for hundreds of thousands of years, secrets that should remain hidden. Some things are too dangerous to know. Bron's secret may be the most dangerous of all.

In his remarkable young adult fantasy debut, David Farland shows why critics have called his work "compelling," "engrossing," "powerful," "profound," and "ultimately life-changing."

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Farland's first YA novel is a compulsively readable fantasy with complex characters and well-drawn settings. Bron Jones has been in foster care since birth, bouncing from one home to another. When his latest placement falls apart, his social worker introduces him to Olivia Hernandez, a talented and well-loved teacher at a performing-arts high school. Olivia and her husband, Mike, seem to be the perfect placement for Bron. But during a shopping trip, Bron and Olivia have a bizarre confrontation with a group of strange people that ends in gunshots and a high-speed chase, leaving one boy dead. Olivia tells Bron that he, she, and the people who attacked them are members of a supernatural race called the masaak and that Bron is a nightingale, a masaak left to be raised by humans. Within the masaak there are two groups, Ael and the power-hungry Draghoul, and they have been at war with each other for millennia. The Ael all possess powers and Olivia and Bron discover that his extraordinary talents haven't been seen in centuries, if ever. The fighting factions either want to control Bron or destroy him. When hiding doesn't work, Bron and Olivia must run. Bron is a conflicted character who, like Luke Skywalker, must discover the truth of his origins, confront an evil father, and deal with the temptations that come with great power. Like the Star Wars hero, he may also be mankind's only hope. Teens, reluctant readers included, will eat this one up.—Anthony C. Doyle, Livingston High School Library, CA

The awesome ending was a huge payoff, and this series is just getting started. I blasted through Nightingale in two days, and whenever I wasn't reading it, I wanted to be reading it. I can't wait for the next book, Dream Assassin. Highly recommended for teens and fans of Twilight and The Hunger Games!
