Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for John D. MacDonald and the Travis McGee novels

The great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.”—Stephen King

“My favorite novelist of all time . . . All I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me. No price could be placed on the enormous pleasure that his books have given me. He captured the mood and the spirit of his times more accurately, more hauntingly, than any ‘literature’ writer—yet managed always to tell a thunderingly good, intensely suspenseful tale.”—Dean Koontz

“To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.”—Kurt Vonnegut

“A master storyteller, a masterful suspense writer . . . John D. MacDonald is a shining example for all of us in the field. Talk about the best.”—Mary Higgins Clark

“A dominant influence on writers crafting the continuing series character . . . I envy the generation of readers just discovering Travis McGee, and count myself among the many readers savoring his adventures again.”—Sue Grafton

“One of the great sagas in American fiction.”—Robert B. Parker

“Most readers loved MacDonald’s work because he told a rip-roaring yarn. I loved it because he was the first modern writer to nail Florida dead-center, to capture all its languid sleaze, racy sense of promise, and breath-grabbing beauty.”—Carl Hiaasen

“The consummate pro, a master storyteller and witty observer . . . John D. MacDonald created a staggering quantity of wonderful books, each rich with characterization, suspense, and an almost intoxicating sense of place. The Travis McGee novels are among the finest works of fiction ever penned by an American author and they retain a remarkable sense of freshness.”—Jonathan Kellerman

“What a joy that these timeless and treasured novels are available again.”—Ed McBain

“Travis McGee is the last of the great knights-errant: honorable, sensual, skillful, and tough. I can’t think of anyone who has replaced him. I can’t think of anyone who would dare.”—Donald Westlake

“There’s only one thing as good as reading a John D. MacDonald novel: reading it again. A writer way ahead of his time, his Travis McGee books are as entertaining, insightful, and suspenseful today as the moment I first read them. He is the all-time master of the American mystery novel.”—John Saul

Meet the Author

John D. MacDonald
John D. MacDonald was an American novelist and short-story writer. His works include the Travis McGee series and the novel The Executioners, which was adapted into the film Cape Fear. In 1962 MacDonald was named a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America; in 1980, he won a National Book Award. In print he delighted in smashing the bad guys, deflating the pompous, and exposing the venal. In life, he was a truly empathetic man; his friends, family, and colleagues found him to be loyal, generous, and practical. In business, he was fastidiously ethical. About being a writer, he once expressed with gleeful astonishment, “They pay me to do this! They don’t realize, I would pay them.” He spent the later part of his life in Florida with his wife and son. He died in 1986.

    Nightmare in Pink

Mystery lovers who enjoy Sue Grafton or Robert Parker will enjoy 60s master John McDonald's color mysteries. Travis McGee is not quite your ordinary detective. Self proclaimed beach bum, lover of life and girls Travis finds himself in extra-ordinary situations. Nightmare in Pink re-introduces Travis to a new generation as he helps a sister of a friend track down a murder and stolen money. At times Travis's in-length detail may be a bit more than needed but the plots are well woven as this makes a good read.

    Party Time part two

((Its supposed to be something like a creepypasta, and i told you it was sortof a horror story. So be warned if your not into that stuff)) Rainbow Dashs eyes widened as she saw Rarity being drowned right before her. She saw Rarity start flailing around, and Pinkimena pulled Raritys head out. "Why arent you saving her, Dashie? I thought you were a hero." The pink party ponys eyes twitched. Rainbow squirmed, trying to break free to save her friend from that evil, crazy pony. Pinkimena laughed and pushed Raritys head in once again. The unicorn squirmed and kicked, but her efforts were in vain. The party pony pulled Raritys head out. "Looks like i have to be the one to save you. Dashie here isnt being very nice!" She pulled Rarity to the other side of the room, where Rainbow couldnt see her. Rainbow felt a wave of terror wash over her as she heard a scream. The scream was soon muffled to a gurgling sound. Pinkimena dragged Rarity back into Rainbows sight. Raritys cheeks had been cut into a smile. Blood dripped down her face, leaving streaks of red. "C'mon, Dashie! Smile!" Pinkimena said cheerfully. When Rainbow didnt laugh, giggle, or even smile, Pinkimena started to get angry. "I said SMILE, Dashie!" Rainbow closed her eyes and imagined all the good times she had with her friends. She tried blocking out the sound of dripping, trying to smile, but what she had wittnessed made her never want to smile again. Suddenly Rainbow felt cold metal on her right cheek. Her eyes snapped open, and the knife started cutting a smile into her. "Isnt this fun, Dashie?! I knew i could make anypony smile!" Tears started to stream down her face. The tears fell into the cuts, making it hurt more. When Pinkimena was done, Rainbow had a huge 'grin' on her face. "Lets get back to playing Pin the Tail. Its Raritys favorite!" She said, picking up Rainbows tail, which was lying on the floor about 10 feet away from them. "I'll be right back, girls! Dont go anywhere!" The pink pony grinned, bouncing into the darkness. Instantly Rarirty tried to get away, but Rainbow shook her head franticly. Though Rainbow couldnt speak, Rarity froze. Just then, Pinkimena bounced back in. There was an iron nail in Rainbows detatched tail, and she was carrying a hammer. "Lets play!" Pinkimena trotted behind Rarity. She lifted the chains to reveal Raritys tail. Carefully placing the rainbow colored tail above the purple, profesdionally styled one, she brung down the hammer. Tears of pain left streaks down Raritys face, smearing even more of her makeup. Soon she had completely nailed the tail down, causing Pinimena to laugh. Suddenly, the pink mares ears perked up. There was no sound, but Pinkimena smiled even more. "Oh! My other friends want to come in!" As she trotted off, the two ponies in chains thought Twilight, Applejack, Fluttershy or Spike would be with the mental pony when she came back, but instead, she had a bucket of turnips, a bag of flour, a pile of rocks, and a ball of lint. "My REAL friends wanted to help me throw a party for you!" Pinkimena said, bouncing up and down with glee. "Whats that, Rocky? Oh! Thats a great idea! What do you think, Mademe Le Flour? Me too!" Pinkimena then turned to face them. "My friends say that we should invite ALL the ponies in town! Wait... but what if they dont like my parties?" A look of pure saddness on Pinkimenas face almost made Rainbow feel bad for her. "But at least YOU two like my parties, RIGHT?!"
