Overview

Lawyer and educator Robert Beattie carefully lays out all of the evidence as well as the false leads in the detailed and dogged investigation of the Wichita serial murderer who called himself BTK, an abbreviation of his MO--Bind, Torture, Kill. Beattie's detailed coverage of the case begins in 1974 with the first series of murders, and ends with the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, Dennis Rader, in February 2005. Beattie's book, begun as a project for a university class he was teaching, is the first to focus on this notorious killer. It is possible that publicity surrounding the upcoming book may be what inspired BTK to begin sending messages to the police again after 25 years of silence, messages which eventually led to Rader's arrest. The book contains an insert of black-and-white photos, including a picture of Rader.

    Poorly written

This book was poorly written. The sentences and paragraphs were choppy. I couldn't get into this book.

    Massive Confusion

The author tended to skip from subject to subject which leaves you wondering if you missed a page or took a wrong turn somewhere. I found it a very easy book to put down and walk away from. After 8 weeks I did manage to finish the book but I was not the least bit impressed. This author and his editors should've tried to clean up this text of massive confusion. I was astounded at how many times he sang his own praises regarding the BTK case. I should've saved the money I spent on this book and gone to the movies instead!

    The Wanderer

If you can manage to pick out the details the book is ok, but Mr. Beattie wanders from subject to subject quite a bit. The end result is confusion. There are just too many long asides about other killers, etc. Sticking to the facts regarding BTK would have made the book a much better read.

Great book!!! Can't stop reading it!

This is a great book that descibes the hunt for the BTK Strangler. You won't be able to stop reading because of the information that is given. The book will not only raise your interest in the BTK Strangler, but also in other serial killers. The information given is amazing and up to date. I can't wait until there's another book that will tell the court case and sentence of this madman. You will not be disappointed. A +++++++++

    College English research/writing professor

With Beattie living among the terrified heartbeat of Wichita's citizens, the factual information is here, but weak considering the number of years he had to work with it. His vocabulary is flat, his diction lifeless. This story needs to be screamed from the rooftops and being a victim of tragedy myself, I am sure that most of BTK's survivors (including all of Wichita) would appreciate candor, anger, and viciousness. Although I cannot be critical to the facts given, Mr. Beattie as a writer should be appalled at the semantics, spelling, and typos. For those in the writing field, the errors are distracting from what could be a high quality of the first published in this topic.

    A ruined book

When I picked up this book I hoped that I would learn some background information about the BTK murders. I am not a native of Wichita so I knew about the murders, but not a lot. I guess in some respects I was not disappointed. I learned many facts and did gain some insight into the feelings of the city during this dark time in Wichita history. However, this could not outweigh the problems I had with the book. I found the writing to be amateurish and the editing sloppy. I attribute some of this to the rush that the publishing company put on the release of the book following the arrest of a suspect. Little things, such as identifying BTK package drops along I35 instead of the correct location, I135 were disappointing. The worst part was Mr. Beattie's need to congratulate himself throughout the last part of the book. It is a never ending commentary on the number of people that told him he was responsible for bringing the killer out of hiding. We also don't care or need to hear about the number of interviews he did and who interviewed him, though Mr. Beattie again seems to take pleasure in revealing this to us. The self congratulatory back patting that he engages in distracts the reader from the true story in the book. Mr. Beattie should have remembered that he was writing about BTK history and not himself, despite the fact that he is now, in his words, 'part of the BTK mystique.' My suggestion, check this book out from the library and quit reading when he begins to discuss his grand role in the BTK investigation. Unfortunately it seems Mr. Beattie got off track at that point and the real story was lost. This ruined the entire book for me and I have yet to talk to another person who has read the book that does not say the same.
