All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
Nights from the Alhambra chronicles ethereal Canadian Celtic/folk/worldbeat artist Loreena McKennitt's 2006 tour in support of her Ancient Muse album. Recorded in September in the Palace of Charles V at the Alhambra, a southern Spanish fortress on the eastern border of the city of Granada built by the Moors, McKennitt employed a 12-piece band that included hurdy-gurdy, oud, uilleann pipes, kanoun, strings, and multiple percussion players. Though there is an emphasis on works from her most recent release, the singer/composer/harpist covers a wide breadth of material from 1985's Elemental ("She Moved Through the Fair") to 1991's acclaimed Visit ("All Souls ...

As with all of her studio recordings, the sound quality is exquisite, making this -- her third live collection -- the best yet. [Nights from the Alhambra is also available with an accompanying DVD, which was filmed in HDTV and captures the night's performance in its entirety.]

    Nights from the Alhambra DVD

This is one of the best musical DVD's.

The music from Loreena is outstanding as always, one of the best features

is the camera work, there was none of kainetic jumping from shot to shot

    like most music videos have.

One of the best live albums you'll ever hear.

In this day of catchy hooks, electronic editting, and cotton candy pop--all sweetness, no substance--the real ART of music is sadly often overlooked by bands and singers just striving for that next chart hit... Loreena McKennitt is NOT one of those singers. She still respects and practices the ART of music. She still genuinely SINGS and plays a number of instruments, from the harp to piano and the accordion as well. This duel CD and DVD set showcases all those aspects: the art, the singing, the real MUSIC of Loreena McKennitt. The songs here are mostly drawn from Loreena's vast repertoire and, as previously criticized, there's almost nothing new in the offering. But the DVD is beautifully put together and each song is serenely performed. In my opinion, Loreena is actually a better live performer than she is in studio. Her studio albums can lack the magic and intimacy that this album flourishes on. If you're a true fan of not just beautiful music, but beautiful performances, you'll adore this CD.

    Repeats/updates of favorites

New package, same old songs. Some are a little different sounding from the live setting. Would have liked a few more new offerings for $25.
