This is a particularly well-balanced set with pianist Dave Brubeck then 73 in typically creative form. Although Brubeck who is accompanied throughout by bassist Jack Six and drummer Randy Jones is actually the real star of every selection coming up with continually inventive ideas whether in ensembles, behind soloists or during his own solos, he is joined by three of his favorite horn players on some of the numbers. Bobby Militello shows a great deal of versatility with some blazing alto on "Yesterdays," melodic playing in a Paul Desmond vein on "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," soulful tenor on "Travelin' Blues" and plenty of intensity on "Knives."
