Overview

As the city sleeps in the early hours of September 10, 2001, the killer waits and watches, unaware of the cataclysm to come. Even the nightmare of 9/11 will not postpone his private reign of terror.

Allison Taylor adores her adopted city, New York, loving every minute of the invigorating urban hustle. But on a bright and clear September morning, the familiar landscape around her is savagely altered—and in the midst of widespread chaos and fear, a woman living upstairs from her is found, brutally slaughtered and mutilated.

For Allison . . . for her neighbor, James "Mack" MacKenna, desperately searching for news of his missing wife . . . for homicide detective Rocky Manzillo, hunting for a monster called "The Nightwatcher" amid the smoking ruins of a devastated city, this tragic day will hold a special horror. Because a different kind of terror has entered their lives . . . and it's coming to claim Allison Taylor as its next victim.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Despite the interesting idea of a serial killer operating in Manhattan immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks, bestseller Staub’s romantic suspense novel ends up doing little with such a dramatic backdrop for crimes that, though savage, have no real connection to the Twin Towers’ destruction. The day after al-Qaeda’s strike, Kristina Haines, who had rejected the awkward advances of her building’s part-time handyman, is butchered in her apartment. The identity of the killer isn’t withheld from the reader for long, making the remainder of the book a thriller focusing on whether callow heroine Allison Taylor, a fashion editor, will successfully evade the murderer and hook up with a neighbor whose wife was in one of the towers when it collapsed. That the book is billed as the kickoff to a new series vitiates much uncertainty as to those two major plot questions, but even as a stand-alone, it suffers from paper-thin characterizations and motivations. Agent: Laura Peterson, Curtis Brown. (Sept.)
Suspense Magazine
“Staub is boss when it comes to relaying fictionalized accounts of revulsion…Suspenseful, powerful, tense and-as usual-wonderfully written with an ending that will leave you guessing...A great read!”
Criminal Element
“The thrills are near constant & combined with the waking nightmare state of 9/11, result in a high-tension and deeply visceral tale that will leave readers in a crippling state of uncertainty. The fear, the paranoia, the desperation--it leaps right off the page and gets under your skin.”
Iron Mountain Daily
“Wendy Corsi Staub has a frightening little tale that will make the reader think about sleeping with the lights on with the dog nearby, ‘Nightwatcher.’”
RT BookReviews
“This first book in a new trilogy starts off with a bang. The action builds right through to the explosive ending. Allison is a relatable character, and Staub really nails the atmosphere of New York immediately following 9/11. Four Stars!”
Mystery Tribune
“This is a well written psychological thriller and narrates the lives or several characters in parallel during the 9/11 period…interesting and rewarding ending episode which paves the way for the sequel of the book”
#1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson
From the first thrilling chase scene, to the final page, Wendy Corsi Staub’s Live To Tell is an incredible, fast-paced story of political intrigue, family crises and nail-biting suspense. I couldn’t put it down.
Lee Child
“Solid gold suspense ... this one is a wild ride.”

    Not up to par

I have been a fan of Wendy Corsi Staub since her first book. Very disappointed with this book. Almost half way through and am struggling to continue. The story rambles on ad on and has little suspense to it. Hope the sequel is better, but I will go to the library instead of buying it.

I've been a long time fan of Staub's and this latest book didn't disappoint on any level. The backdrop of 9/11 just added to the fear and suspense Staub usually does so well in her novels. Without wanting to give too much away, I really got to care about the main character, Allison, and was turning pages like crazy to see what happens. Staub had me hoping until the end things would turn out for our heroine and has left a very intriguing cliff hanger. Can't wait for book two!

    Wow, failed with this one!

I am a fan of Wendy Corsi Staub, and I was so disappointed with this novel. There was so little suspense, nothing happening, a very hard read which is so unlike her older novels. This novel is about 911 and a murder here or there. Hope her next novel, the follow up to this one is better.

    Thriller!!

If you enjoying reading murder mystery thrillers, you will enjoy Wendy Corsi Staub! This book was a little difficult to read as it skipped back and forth among the characters and their stories, but it was every bit as exciting and hard to put down as any murder mystery I've read!! The story is set in NYC during the 9/11 disaster and deals with the loses due to the terrorists as well as a serial killer threatening the main characters.

This is the first book I've read by this author. A fast read. Wish the characters had more depth. The stalker is predictable with no understanding of why he is they way he is. I sympathized with the handyman. The backstory was tiresome and slowed the pace.

This book had promise but petered out. It is the first book in a long time I haven't finished reading. To much he said/she said.

    Exciting thriller

This book keeps you on the edge waiting to see what happens next. It delivers just like Wendy Corsi Staub's books always do. Just remember it is a series because when you reach the end of the 1st book it leaves you hanging, so you have to buy the next ones to see what happens next.

This was my first read by Wendy Corsi Staub that was met with mixed reviews from others so I wasn't sure what my opinion would
    be, but I loved it!

I found that I really enjoyed the story and found it easy to read and difficult to put down!  I thought that it was a pretty intense story that
I thought I had parts of it figured out early on, only to be overly surprised at the actual outcome!  It also brings back so many deep
haunting memories of the terrifying ordeal of 9/11 and almost takes you back to that time in your life.  There was also a little bit of a
sub-story that followed along with this story, and I found that enjoyable!

The characters were easy to read about and left me wanting to continue the series right away.  The author gives you just enough
depth to each character to leave you curious about their lives.

According to many reviews, this is not the best book of this series, however, I thought it was a great book so I really look forward to
the next book in this series!
