Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Hartzler
With adorable pictures of yawning, sleepy, fuzzy baby animals, this book will be irresistible to young children. The authors have made this book fun to learn about the sleeping patterns of different types of animals. The close-up pictures of the species give readers a glimpse of these rare baby animals that most would not see in the wild or in a zoo. This title is classified as a Level-One Star Reader whereby the reader should engage in easy sight words and words to sound out as well as simple plot and dialogue. However, the authors choose species of animals that could make emerging readers struggle. Without the pronunciation in a glossary of terms, readers will stumble on several of the species within this book. Also, the title is a little young for Level-One readers. Emerging readers in this age group might find the term "Nighty Night" a bit young or relate it to baby talk. The book is a good resource for teachers to bring up topics like nocturnal animals or endangered species. This book might also be a good aid with a field trip to a zoo where children can ask Zoologists questions. Despite the difficult names of species and the title, children will like looking at the cute and cuddly pictures of the young animals. Reviewer: Denise Hartzler
