Children's Literature - Allison Fetters
The "Children's Author" series presents a wonderful account of Nikki Grimes, award-winning children's book author, poet, jewelry-maker and overall fascinating person. The reader is given a glimpse into Ms. Grimes' rich, albeit painful at times, childhood and the experiences that inspired her to go within and express herself through her writing. As a young adult, she came in contact with mentors and teachers along the way that kept her moving in a positive direction to realize the full potential of her talents and skills. Today, she continues writing and speaking as a way of sharing her life experiences through the voice she wants others to hear. The book provides wonderful photographic depictions of Ms. Grimes. A complete glossary is presented that defines terms used throughout the book. The index is an excellent reference guide. The websites section provides additional resources for individuals wanting to learn more about Nikki Grimes and other writers presented through ABDO Publishing. This is indeed an educational read about one of our prominent African-American writers. Reviewer: Allison Fetters
School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—The lives of popular authors are briefly chronicled in a chatty style. The subjects all took different paths to becoming successful writers, but a common thread woven throughout the biographies is the importance of persistence. Four of the five titles stress the authors' early love of reading and libraries. All of them had supportive adults who helped them become confident and willing to take the risk of writing full time. Grimes, especially, emphasizes the importance of influential teachers and other role models in developing young literary talent. Each book contains the relevant information necessary for reports. Literary awards are documented throughout. However, a complete bibliography of the authors' works would have been useful. High-quality, full-color photos appear throughout these solid choices especially for reluctant readers.—Lisa Crandall, formerly at Capital Area District Library, Holt, MI
