Overview

One can live for several weeks without food but only a few days without water, a fact that seventeen year old Niko is only too aware of as she struggles to provide for her two younger brothers in a post-apocalyptic landscape where the rain burns like acid, food grows scarce, and any Slither that crosses her path is laid low before it can sink its teeth into her.

Then one night everything she's ever worked for, everything she's ever loved is consumed by a raging fire, leaving her with one brother dead, the other missing and herself gravely injured.

She's rescued by the Rose Circle, a rogue group of Slither hunters. They sneak her into Amaryllis City, a decadent metropolis where those able to afford the exorbitant entrance fee live a life of relative ease.

But for Niko, Amaryllis City is not the haven she grew up believing it would be, the deeper she delves the nastier it gets and when her unique abilities as a Slither hunter are discovered things get positively filthy.

All Niko ever wanted to do was find her baby brother but that's proving to be harder than she ever would have expected.

Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite Niko (the Outside

Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite

Niko (the Outsider Chronicles) was written by Kayti Nika Raet. In this dystopian tale we meet seventeen-year-old Harmony Niko. She lives in a post-apocalyptic world where rain is like acid and creatures called Slithers will eat your heart if given the chance. The Slithers have multicolored eyes, fangs, and claws, yet they may have once been human. Niko knows that her two brothers are totally dependent upon her so she learned to carry a big stick, actually a baseball bat with a nail sticking out of it. She never hesitated to kill a Slither when she had the opportunity. But the Slithers killed one of her brothers and the other one disappeared. She was taken in by an organization called the Rose Circle made up of Slither Killers. They lived in Amaryllis City, which appears to be a place of opulence, but in reality was more like a prison. The Rose Circle had many secrets and if Niko was ever to find her brother she had to discover the answers to all the secrets.

Kayti Nika Raet is a talented author. She has deftly created a landscape that is nightmarish and a heroine that is interesting, shocking, and yet likable. This book starts out with a bang or at least a jab and the action and suspense continues to build. Niko demonstrates the results that occur when man tries to fix his own mistakes. Man is very good at making things worse than they were. This is the first book in a series. I believe this book will appeal to teens and young adults. With a bit of tweaking, Kayti Nika Raet has a hit on her hands.
