Overview

Debunking the common misconception that a flash is only necessary in low-light situations, this guidebook provides professional instruction on how to properly direct and shape light in order to marshal mood, shape, texture, and color to make photographs more dynamic and visually interesting. Beginning with an introduction to the basic characteristics of light—the quality and diffusion of light, the direction of the light, and the color of the light—this work goes on to discuss aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and their relation to Nikon flash systems. After teaching how to master these fundamentals, this book discusses how to use Nikon flashes, how to modify the light from flashes, and what subject matter looks good in different lighting situations. Sequential shots are paired with descriptive text and pull-back images allow for easy understanding of this important element to capturing lasting images.

In her Nikon Speedlight handbook, Stephanie does much more than cover basic flash techniques. Although she starts off slow (so this book is great for beginners), the book quickly moves into more creative and more advanced techniques. As a full time professional photographer for the last 7 years, I feel quite confident in my lighting techniques. After reading this book however, I feel the drive to go out and be more creative and use some of the alternate techniques that are demonstrated. One major plus of the book? Each kind of lighting scenario is explained in photographs and text. For those of us who are visual learners, the inclusion of so many beautiful photographs is very helpful. For the more technical minded, the text is clear, concise, and easy to understand.

This book details how to get the most out of your flash, whether you have it on camera or off. Using stunning images as examples, Stephanie explains the tools and techniques you need to create well lit subjects no matter where you are.
