Overview

Nine years ago, Steve Hale saved the love of his life from her abusive and very powerful stepfather by helping her disappear and framing him for her murder. Today, that stepfather is dead, executed by the state of Missouri for a crime he didn’t commit, and Steve has a loving wife, a little girl who depends on him, a home, a career – everything he ever wanted and believed he could never have. He also has a new voice mail from a woman the rest of the world believes is dead.

A reunion with his former girlfriend quickly sours when Steve realizes that her stories don't match up – the one she told nine years ago and the one she told today.

As he unravels her twisted knot of lies, he discovers that events are already in motion and plans are being carried out. Unwittingly, he’s hurtling toward a dark secret – one some very dangerous people are willing to protect at any cost.

“Like Blue Velvet and Hitchcock films, NINE YEARS GONE tries to capture something dark and sinister just beneath the thin facade of everyday living... Thrilling, disturbing and at times gut-wrenching, NINE YEARS GONE is a fast-paced, tightly executed thriller with little breathing room and a penchant for not being able to be put down for long.”

Steve Hale is an average guy except for one fact: nine years ago

Steve Hale is an average guy except for one fact: nine years ago, he helped his former girlfriend fake her own death and framed her abusive stepfather for murder. Now, that abusive stepfather is dead and that former girlfriend is back—and she’s homicidal.

I’m a big fan of Culver’s Ash Rashid series, so I looked forward to this book and wasn’t disappointed. It started a little slow, but it ended up being a very good psychological thriller that kept me up late at night. By the time you get about a third of the way in, it basically goes from one cliffhanger to another. That made for a fun read.

My biggest beef is that I wish the secondary characters had been better developed. I really didn't get to know Vince or Isaac before they left the story. It didn’t take away from the book, but I would have liked to see more of them.

Overall, Nine Years Gone is a fast-paced, well-written novel with plenty of suspense to keep readers happy.

Worst book I have ever read

There has to be something: if not interesting characters, then intriguing plot; if neither of the previous, then it has to be well written - exceedingly well written (ie Chang-Rae Lee, Richard Russo, etc). This book has NOT ONE of these requirements. I am angry and dumber for having read it. What a waste of time.

    Could not connect

The premise was interesting, but the story unfolded implausibly. There were a number of editorial errors.
